With those final words, Jacob pushed himself to his feet, steadying himself with Maria's help.
Vincent stood up right away. "Let me drive you two home."
Jacob quickly waved the offer off. "No need, we can get home on our own. You two ought to wash up and get some rest."
"I'm only seeing you out to the entrance," Vincent insisted.
Unable to turn down his persistence, Jacob stopped arguing.
Once Jacob and Maria left the premises, Vincent returned to the great hall and sank onto the sofa before lighting a cigarette in silence.
Sabrina stepped into the room moments later. Spotting him smoking, she could easily tell he was tangled up in heavy, upsetting thoughts.
After pausing briefly by the doorway, she crossed over toward him.
Stopping in front of his seat, she lowered her voice gently. "Did my dad's request put you in a tough spot?"
Vincent said nothing and kept drawing on his cigarette.
Thin smoke curled upward, half-obscuring his face with no readable emotion, leaving Sabrina completely unable to guess what ran through his mind.
Following a long, quiet stretch, Sabrina spoke again, "If this is too much for you, you don't have to take his words seriously. Just treat what he said as—"
Her sentence got cut short when Vincent suddenly lifted his head and fixed his gaze on her, his tone earnest. "Let's hold the wedding ceremony first. We can file for official marriage license paperwork in a month."
Sabrina froze, stunned by his unexpected proposal.
She'd heard countless promises from him before and had grown numb, yet the prospect of an actual wedding still stirred quiet anticipation inside her.
When she remained quiet, Vincent asked softly, "Is that alright with you?"
Snapping back to reality, she nodded. "Yes."
Vincent stubbed out his cigarette in the ashtray and rose to his feet, his tone flat. "I'll call my family right now to make arrangements. We'll host the wedding within seven days."
Sabrina automatically stood as he got up.
"You don't need to follow me," he told her. "I'll be back downstairs once I finish the call."
She said nothing more and offered a faint smile as he headed upstairs.
Vincent walked into the home study after climbing the stairs. He sat at the desk and finished another cigarette before dialing Amanda's number.
The call picked up after a few rings.
"You finally bothered to call? Anyone would think you don't have a mother anymore," Amanda snapped the second she answered, sharp with frustration.
