Scarlett could never get a full night's rest until her divorce was finalized. She ached to wrap up the paperwork and step into a brand-new life as soon as possible.
After listening to her troubles, Felix spoke to Scarlett. "This has to follow official legal procedures; there's no shortcut whatsoever."
Scarlett let out a quiet, deflated sigh at his words. "I see. Thank you, Mr. Wilson."
Seeing her dejection, Felix added gently, "Come to me if you run into any other trouble down the line. I can't fix every problem, but I'll do what I'm able."
Scarlett tugged up a faint smile. "I appreciate it."
The pair stood curbside chatting for a while, soft smiles resting on both their faces.
Off to the side, Damian watched their exchange, his expression darkening little by little.
Zachary spotted Damian's souring mood and stepped closer with a teasing lilt. "What? You wanna sneak over and eavesdrop?"
Damian jabbed Zachary hard in the ribs with his elbow, his voice sharp with irritation. "Mind your own business."
Zachary feigned hurt and shot back, "Like I've got nothing better to do than stick my nose into your drama?"
Damian rolled his eyes and said nothing further.
Down at the curb, Scarlett finished her talk with Felix, and the two walked toward the others one after another.
As they drew near, Damian strode forward and slipped his hand into Scarlett's. "Let me drive you home."
Scarlett glanced down at his hand but did not pull away. "Okay."
Nearby, Zachary's gaze drifted automatically toward Claire, Clara, and Eric.
Claire held one small child in each hand while Clara and Eric bickered back and forth about something trivial.
A warm, involuntary smile tugged at Claire's lips as she watched the kids squabble. Her smile pulled a matching grin onto Zachary's face.
Sensing someone's gaze fixed on her, Claire lifted her head and locked eyes straight with Zachary. A swirl of conflicting emotions flickered across both of their faces.
Zachary's smile faded in embarrassment, and he hurried to speak. "Claire, can I drop you off at home later?"
Claire shook her head with a mild smile. "Thanks, but there's no need. I drove myself here."
Zachary's good mood vanished instantly, his tone laced with quiet sorrow. "Must you keep me at such a distance?"
Her smile stayed polite yet distant. "Not at all, Mr. Graham. You're Scarlett's friend, which makes you my friend too."
