Once Maria was sure the little girl had settled down, she headed back to her own bedroom without a second thought.
A burning, itchy prickling crawled all over Vanessa's scalded back, just like swarms of ants creeping across her skin.
She ended up lying flat on her stomach atop the bed, too grimy and uncomfortable to fall asleep no matter how hard she tried.
She could not recall when she finally drifted off deep into the small hours, yet Scarlett showed up in her dreams.
"Mommy... Mommy..."
Vanessa jolted awake with a start, only to be met with empty silence all around her.
Dim streaks of moonlight slipped through the windows, revealing nobody beside her bed at all.
Clutching her blanket, she suddenly started to sob.
In her dream, Scarlett had carried her to the hospital and held ice packs against her burned skin nonstop to soothe the ache.
In harsh reality, there was no one nearby to care for her.
It was in that moment that Vanessa missed Scarlett terribly.
Whenever she'd fallen sick before, Scarlett was always the one who doted on her most.
Now, even if Maria left her abandoned out in the woods overnight, no one would ever find out what happened to her.
Vanessa buried her tear-streaked face into the covers, shoulders hitching as she whimpered under her breath. "Mommy, I miss you so much..."
Still, she dared not cry out loud, terrified Maria would hear her cries and make good on her threat to dump her in the cold woodland.
...
Two days later, Scarlett was scheduled for surgery to remove the pins from her leg.
Violet came with her.
She was wheeled into the operating room at nine in the morning and rolled out shortly past noon once surgery wrapped up.
Scarlett slowly blinked awake inside her hospital room to spot Violet sitting beside her bed.
Relief washed over Violet the second their eyes met. "Thank goodness you're awake. How are you feeling?"
A bitter aftertaste lingered in Scarlett's mouth, yet she managed a faint smile and rasped out an answer. "I'm fine."
Violet relaxed visibly. "You must be starving. Diana's brought homemade food and is on her way over right now."
A soft smile tugged at Scarlett's lips, and she nodded gently. "Okay."
Violet tucked the hospital blanket neatly around her shoulders. "I'll step out to give her a quick call. I'll head downstairs to meet her so she doesn't get lost finding this ward."
