Damian took back the wedding invitation, and a strange surge of joy welled up inside him when he saw Scarlett's unruffled expression.
He answered her question right away. "That's just how high-society circles work. No matter how vicious the undercurrents get behind closed doors, everyone's forced to keep up a peaceful facade out in public."
Scarlett only hummed an indifferent "Oh", then turned to Damian. "If you're going to the wedding, pass along my congratulations to him for me."
Damian let out a soft laugh. "If you've got something to say, tell him yourself. I'm not running errands delivering messages."
Scarlett blinked in surprise, confused. "I wasn't invited, so I'm not showing up at his wedding."
Damian suddenly wrapped a hand around her forearm, feigning a sharp frown as he pressed her. "Did you forget who you are?"
It took Scarlett a beat to catch on to his meaning, and she pulled back instinctively. "Damian, you and I aren't like that yet. You can't just—"
His features hardened at her words. "We will sooner or later."
"Back then, it wasn't me who saved your life, and the woman you'd planned to marry wasn't me either." Scarlett's voice cracked as she spoke, her chest aching as if her heart was splitting open.
Melinda's words had been honest; she really didn't belong with someone like Damian.
Instead of growing angry at her cutting remarks, Damian reached out and brushed stray strands of hair away from her cheek.
Then he lowered his voice to a soft murmur. "Are you letting other people's gossip get into your head again?"
Scarlett dropped her gaze, unable to meet his eyes. "But every word of it is the truth."
Undaunted, Damian laced his fingers through hers and pressed her palm flat against his chest. "Scarlett, my heart's always belonged only to you. There's no room left for anyone else."
Scarlett lifted her head to lock eyes with him, struck by the raw sincerity on his face.
A flutter of nervousness she'd never known before twisted in her stomach.
Maybe wanting something too badly was what made her too scared to commit.
...
Scarlett was released from the hospital a day later. Her wound was healing nicely, and her doctor signed off on her recovering at home.
Nathan and Violet picked her up; Damian never showed.
Back at Theron Manor, Diana had spent the day prepping a full spread of wholesome home cooking.
After Scarlett finished her meal, Violet helped her up the staircase to rest.
Right before bed, Diana brought her a warm glass of milk, which Scarlett drank before settling down under the covers.
Half-asleep, she caught a faint scraping noise coming from the bedroom window.
