He stopped roughly three feet away from her, his voice sharp with lingering resentment. "Sneaking in through the window was our private secret—so why'd you spill it to him?"
Damian had spotted boot prints by the windowsill the second he climbed inside earlier, yet he'd paid them no mind and hopped right into the bedroom.
Scarlett rushed to clear up the misunderstanding. "Damian, I never told him a single thing about that."
No trace of warmth lingered on Damian's face, his tone thick with irritation. "You're nothing but a liar, Scarlett."
With that, he spun on his heel and headed for the door.
As he pulled open the bedroom door, Violet and Nathan stood waiting right outside the frame.
He said not a word, stepped around the pair, and headed downstairs.
Violet hadn't gotten the chance to ask a single question before he vanished toward the ground floor.
Inside the room, Scarlett took a couple of hurried steps after him, calling out desperately, "Damian, I honestly never told him anything!"
She hated being falsely accused more than anything, driven by an overwhelming urge to set the record straight, yet Damian never paused and kept walking down the stairs without glancing back.
When Scarlett reached the doorway, she found Violet and Nathan still standing there.
Violet frowned in concern. "What's going on, Scarlett?"
Scarlett's voice was frazzled with worry. "Vincent's still inside the bedroom. Please call Lily and ask her to come pick him up. I need to run after Damian."
Without another word, she hurried toward the staircase, her heart racing ahead of her slow, sore footsteps.
Even with no sign of Damian anywhere in sight, she pushed on outside to the front gate of Theron Manor.
When she reached the gate of Theron Manor, she saw Damian's car still parked there. Relief flashed across her face, and she hurried toward it.
In her rush out the door, her recently operated leg slammed hard against the iron gate. A sharp, blazing pain shot all across her body, making her shiver violently.
All her weight rested on her uninjured leg, with nothing to steady herself. She reached out for the gate to prop herself up, but fell short, tipping forward toward the pavement.
Scarlett squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the incoming impact, yet the expected ache never came.
When she opened her eyes again, Damian's worried face hovered right over hers.
