Scarlett opened her eyes. Her body felt like it had been wrung out. She couldn't muster an ounce of strength.
Damian saw how worn out and dazed she looked. He lay down on top of the blanket, then gently pulled her and the blanket into his arms.
"I'm sorry," he said, full of guilt. "I hurt you."
She nestled against him, breathing in the clean scent of his body wash. Somehow, it made her feel safe.
She was too exhausted to talk. She just shook her head.
Damian pressed his cheek against hers. Still worried, he asked, "Are you upset?"
She shook her head again. Afraid he might think she was angry, she burrowed a little deeper into his chest.
The moment he felt her move closer, he smiled, relieved.
He held her, kissing her forehead and murmuring softly, "Get some sleep. We'll head back when you wake up."
Scarlett finally spoke, "Okay."
Damian twirled a strand of her hair between his fingers and smiled, "Don't worry. No matter what happens, I'm here. If your brother asks, just blame me. I'll handle it. Everything's going to be fine."
Scarlett listened, and a small smile touched her lips. "Okay."
Then she closed her eyes.
After everything they'd done, she had nothing left. Even moving felt like too much.
Soon, she was asleep in his arms.
When she opened her eyes again, she saw nothing but darkness. Not a single trace of light.
She shifted slightly and realized someone was right there beside her.
"Damian?" Her voice came out rough and quiet in the dark.
The answer came fast. "Right here."
At the same time, a hand reached for her in the darkness.
Scarlett grabbed it quickly, her voice trembling. "Can you turn on the light?"
Damian reached over and flipped the switch.
When the light flooded the room, he saw the panic and confusion on her face.
He wrapped an arm around her, worried. "Bad dream?"
