Scarlett murmured a quiet "Mhm."
That soft, faint sound sent a violent jolt through Vincent's chest.
The calm he'd managed to hold shattered all at once, his emotions churning wildly again.
His fingers curled tight without thinking. He tilted his head up to stare at Scarlett's reflection in the mirror. She was fully absorbed in browsing gowns, completely oblivious to his heavy, scrutinizing gaze fixed on her.
His eyes drifted lower as he watched, landing on her neck. The faint, clear hickeys there spoke volumes, laying everything bare before him.
Vincent froze solid on the spot, his heart in turmoil. It took him a long moment to pull himself back to reality. His knuckles whitened from how tightly he clenched his fists, his heart hammering violently against his ribs.
When he looked back over, Scarlett and Damian had already picked out a gown—soft, pure white.
Damian nodded toward the sales associate. "Bring this one for her to try on."
The clerk brightened instantly. "You've got excellent taste, sir. This shade will look stunning on your wife; it's our brand-new arrival."
A warm smile tugged at Damian's lips. "My girl looks beautiful in anything."
The associate fetched the gown off the rack as she spoke, "You spoil her so much, sir. It's lovely to see."
Damian chuckled softly. "A wife's meant to be cherished."
The clerk unhooked the hanger and drew back the curtain to the fitting room, handing the dress to Scarlett. "Just call if you need help, ma'am. I'll be right outside the door."
A delicate blush tinted Scarlett's cheeks as she took the gown. "Thank you."
"Of course, it's my pleasure."
Scarlett and Sabrina both headed into separate fitting rooms, leaving only Damian and Vincent out in the main boutique space.
Damian lingered outside Scarlett's fitting room, while Vincent slouched alone on the sofa, his head hung low, lost in tangled, heavy thoughts.
Damian shot him a sideways glance, half tempted to tease him. Before he could utter a word, Vincent abruptly stood from the couch. He turned to the clerk posted outside Sabrina's fitting room.
