Maria decided to take dinner up to Vanessa, all to make sure her daughter's wedding went off without a hitch.
The girl had misbehaved the day before, throwing a fit to head back to Ravenshade Villa and see Vincent. As punishment, Maria had kept meals from her and made her stay in her room to reflect all day long.
She had not checked on Vanessa once, and had no idea how the little girl was doing.
Maria walked from the dining area into the kitchen. She spotted leftover warm pasta and uneaten vegetables on the stove.
She figured the scraps would do for dinner. It was enough to keep the child from starving, and nothing more.
As she filled a plate with the food, the memory of Vanessa kicking her the night before flared up her anger. A malicious thought crossed her mind. She leaned over and spat onto the plate.
She then stirred the food around with a fork, a cruel grin spreading across her face once she finished. Carrying the plate, she sauntered slowly upstairs.
She reached the bedroom on the second floor and knocked on the door.
A pleading voice came from inside right away. "I know I was bad. Please give me some food. I'm so hungry..."
The child's voice was rough and hoarse.
Maria felt not a shred of sympathy for her pleas. She would have ignored the girl entirely, if not for the fact that Vincent would see her in just a couple of days.
She pushed the door open and stepped inside without a trace of politeness.
The room was pitch black. Dim light seeped in from the hallway, letting her barely see Vanessa sitting on the floor nearby. The little girl looked up at her, eyes filled with desperate hope.
Maria brushed off the pleading look. She flipped on the light, crouched down, and tossed the plate roughly in front of Vanessa. "Eat, you wretched brat."
Her gestures were those of someone tossing scraps to a beggar.
Vanessa lunged for the food ravenously. She paid no mind to the plain pasta, or the greens she had always hated.
She grabbed the plate. Too famished to use utensils, she shoveled food into her mouth with her bare hands. She ate every last bite, swallowing even the contaminated food without hesitation.
