Scarlett nodded, "I will. I'll know my limits."
Realizing she was set on returning to work, Damian pulled a drama face, "Guess that means I won't get to see you 24/7 anymore."
Scarlett chuckled, "We can still hang out after work."
Still, Damian knew a doctor's grind all too well.
Once back in the ER, who knew what insane hours she'd be stuck with.
The thought alone made him want to talk her out of it right then and there.
He parted his lips to persuade her, but catching her determined gaze, his words softened, "I don't mean anything bad by it—I just don't wanna see you burn out."
Scarlett nodded understandingly, "I know."
Deep down, Damian really hated the idea of her working—endless stress, plus losing time together.
Yet he knew better than to clip her wings; she deserved to pursue her passion.
So despite his reluctance, he backed her choices.
Scarlett saw right through his worries, but she wasn't about to lose herself; a woman needed her independence, career, and personal space.
No matter how crazy Damian was about her now, who could guarantee forever?
Right then, the server brought out their food.
Once the dishes were set, the two ate quietly.
Halfway through the meal, Scarlett's phone suddenly rang.
Glancing down, she saw an unknown caller ID.
After a brief pause, she took the call.
A crisp female voice came through, "Hello, is this Ms. Scarlett Theron? This is the Hematology Nurses' Station at Rivergate Central Hospital. You're listed as Mr. Nolan Huntley's emergency contact, but he's vanished from his room, so we're reaching out."
Panic hit Scarlett instantly as she blurted out, "Got it, I'll try reaching him right away."
The nurse added, "Please give us a call back if you get ahold of him, and bring him back immediately—he's in critical condition and shouldn't be wandering around."
Scarlett replied swiftly, "Understood."
Hanging up, she dialed Nolan's number without missing a beat.
The phone rang through, but nobody picked up.
Physicians cannot heal themselves—Scarlett finally understood the tragic truth of that line.
Unable to sit idle, Scarlett tried dialing Nolan again, but when it rang unanswered, she left a voice message instead.
"Nolan, please don't scare me like this, okay? Just text me back and let me come talk to you."
Her voice cracked horribly into the receiver, tears brimming over her lashes.
Damian pulled out a napkin and offered it over; Scarlett hesitated before taking it, her chest aching uncontrollably.
How could such a brilliant man end up like this?
The thought sent a sharper pang through her heart.
She turned her head away, unwilling to let Damian see her breaking down.
Yet the more she tried to hide, the clearer Damian saw her agony.
Though his heart ached for her, he stayed silent, knowing words would only make her feel worse.
After five painful minutes, Scarlett's phone vibrated with a message notification.
She opened the app on instinct, and sure enough, it was from Nolan.
Without a single word of text, he had simply sent a live location pin.
