Chapter 100 No Free Lunch
As for Caleb’s actual girlfriend, Hanna—she’d made some questionable choices because of Caleb’s outrageous behavior.
Yet she never once targeted Stella for it. Though it made no difference. Always the picture of sweetness and gentleness, Stella constantly lectured Hanna on how a proper female ought to behave: soft, patient, and accommodating.
Those little speeches won Stella a huge following of male fans. Hanna, meanwhile, lost a huge chunk of hers. And later, when Caleb leaked her private photos and the scandal broke, Stella’s male fans worked overtime to make sure the damage was as devastating as possible.
But Layla knew better than to jump in and save someone who wasn’t ready to be saved. Hanna needed to figure things out for herself. Until then, anyone who tried to help would just end up covered in the same filth.
Layla’s call to get down to business was exactly the excuse Caleb needed.
“Right! You said yesterday you’d share the salt with everyone. So bring it out already!”
[Unbelievable.]
[I don’t even like Layla, but come on. What did she ever do to this shameless male?]
[She didn’t have to do anything. The guy’s just greedy. Stir him up a little, and he forgets his own name.]
[Are you shading Stella again? She was just trying to comfort him. Just because you’re nasty doesn’t mean you can’t stand other people being nice.]
[Who said anything about Stella? You’re the one jumping to conclusions. Sounds like you even think she stirred him up.]
[I’m more curious how Layla’s going to play this.]
[Play what? There are like two shameless people here. Everyone else came to trade. Nobody’s here for handouts. Even Blaze brought meat.]
Layla didn’t disappoint Caleb. She shot Yates a look, and he scampered into the cave and came back with a clay jar full of fine salt.
“Holy!” Seren slithered to the front. “You made this yourself?”
“It’s extracted from seawater. Prof. Slater provided the equipment.”
The three unattached beastkins had been brought by Caleb. They’d had their doubts about him-even without knowing him personally, there was plenty of online chatter about Hanna’s boyfriend.
They didn’t trust Caleb. But the chance to score a deal was hard to pass up.
Not a handout—just a better price. Layla’s salt was cheaper than what the production crew was offering. If they had to buy anyway, why not buy from the cheaper source?

That was why they’d come.
When they heard the equipment was Shane’s work, whatever doubts they’d had about the salt evaporated.
Shane? The genius mech designer?
Making a device to extract salt would be child’s play for him.
Seren said, “I’m not here for a handout. I’ve got meat. Trade me some?”
Layla smiled, “You came all this way. It wouldn’t be right to take your meat too.” .
Seren said, “No freebies. I have a reputation to protect. If I mooched off a young lady, my fans would murder me.
“They already think I talk too much. If I turned out to be shameless on top of that, they’d really jump ship. My fanbase is flaky enough as it is.”
[He’s not wrong. Last year, I couldn’t take the nonstop chatter anymore and unfollowed him. This year, he dropped a new song, and I realized he’s actually pretty great when he shuts up. So I followed him again.]
[Same. I’m embarrassed to admit I’m his fan.]
[Same. He just won’t let me go. Every time I quit because he talks too much, he drops a banger and pulls me back in.]
[If you can’t take it, try George. He sings pretty well too.]
[Wait, what’s so great about George? Seren just talks too much—at least we can talk back. George is so vícious with his mouth, I can’t even win an argument.]
