Chapter 99 The Cicada’s Mouth
Seren Gideon shot Avery an embarrassed look and fell silent.
But he lasted less than two minutes before he started up again. “I can’t help it. Cicada beastkins are just like this.”
“Winter’s coming. Cicadas are supposed to be dead,” Avery sniffed.
Seren was a Pine Cicada beastkin.
His fans had a way of describing him.
[Ahhhhh! I can’t take it anymore! Why is he so loud? He’s the loudest person I’ve ever seen.]
[He just runs his mouth a little. He’s actually a pretty decent guy…]
[I can’t imagine the poor soul who ends up marrying him. What a nightmare that’ll be.]
[Let that nightmare be mine. I’ll take one for the team, ladies.]
Even his own fans couldn’t stand Seren’s mouth, let alone everyone else.
And the guy was way too righteous for his own good.
Like, he’d just openly trash-talk people to their faces.
With those few sentences alone, he’d already managed to offend both Caleb and Stella.
And he seemed completely oblivious to how ugly their expressions had gotten. He just kept crowding up to Avery.
Avery backed away two steps. “Don’t come near me. I’m allergic to cicadas.”
“Liar. I don’t believe you.” Seren squeezed himself between Sebastian and Avery, planting himself right next to the latter. “My mom told me the prettier a beastkin is, the bigger a liar they are. You must be the biggest liar of them all.”
Everyone was having a grand old time, but no one was talking about the salt. Stella was getting anxious.
She nudged Caleb’s arm. “Cal, didn’t you have something to say to everyone?”
Off to the side, Hanna tugged at Caleb’s sleeve. “Let’s just go back?”
She’d heard everything Seren said. These people hadn’t come to pressure Layla at all. They’d come to trade for salt.
“Go back where?” Caleb shook her off and pushed her backward. “Stupid female. Get out of the way. Don’t interrupt when men are talking.”
[Ugh! There he goes pushing Hanna again.]
[I’m done being a fan. We bust our asses defending her every day, and the moment Caleb gives her a look,

she goes running back to him like a trained puppy.]
[She’s a huge star. Why does she grovel like this? I’m so done. People called Layla shameless, but Hanna’s the one throwing herself at a guy who treats her like dirt. I’ve never seen anything like it.]
[She’s just lovesick. What can you do? She’ll wake up when he drags her down for good.]
[Isn’t he dragging her down already? Didn’t Blaze approach her before, and she turned him down flat?
Caleb shoved Hanna so hard she stumbled. Before she could fall backward, Blaze reached out and caught her. His muscular arm braced across her lower back, but he kept his hand in a fist, not touching her. “You okay?”
Hanna shook her head and stepped out of his hold. “I’m fine. Thanks, Blaze.”
Blaze said nothing. He withdrew his hand and fixed his gaze on Caleb.
Caleb was glaring daggers at Hanna. “Shameless slut. I’m standing right here, and you’re already throwing yourself at another male?”
“I wasn’t!” Hanna’s voice was quiet, but the hurt in it was unmistakable.
“You’re still lying? You think I’m blind?” Caleb charged at her, fist already raised.
Layla’s eyes sharpened. Beside her, Shane stepped forward.
But Blaze got there first. He moved in front of Hanna, his cold stare fixed on Caleb. “You’re going to hit a female?”
“Who do you think you are? Some kind of hero?”
Tigers, whether in the wild or in the Beast World, sat at the top of the food chain.
Sure, the Beast World had laws against beastkins killing each other. But as a monkey beastkin, Caleb still felt that deep, primal fear of a tiger.
He yelled loudly, but he didn’t dare actually throw a punch. He shot Hanna a vicious glare. “This isn’t over when we get home.”
“Let’s focus on the matter at hand.” Layla hadn’t tried to stop anyone. She even pulled Shane back.
She didn’t know what had happened between Hanna and Caleb. The book barely mentioned the side characters’ backstories.
