Chapter 102 Dividing the Work
The same logic applied to the royal family.
As the prince, Oliver had no inheritance rights.
In the original book, the reason he was willing to enter into an arrangement with Stella was simple: he wanted an easy mate he could control.
The Grant family owned an Empire-certified mech factory and held the status of imperial merchants.
They were wealthy. Not the most influential family, but far from pushovers. Most importantly for Oliver, they were not old money, so they would place few restrictions on him.
All these factors combined to make Stella his choice.
Which meant that in the early stages of the story, his feelings for her were far from pure.
He was mostly using her.
There was no real emotion involved. Most of the time, he just placated her.
Exactly like he was doing now.
He had a nice exterior, but he was low-key shady.
He started guiding Stella toward the exit. “Don’t be upset. Let them work for Layla if they want. I’ll take you home.”
But as he left, he shot Carson a look.
It wasn’t a challenge.
It was a message. He would take the problem back. Carson would handle things here.
Layla found Oliver’s maneuvering quite interesting.
Shane, on the other hand, was not having a good time.
Especially watching Layla’s gaze linger on Oliver.
He felt an urge to strangle Oliver.
A chill ran down Oliver’s spine. He caught Carson’s signal and kept walking, still murmuring reassurances to Stella. “We’re going home. We don’t have to put up with this mistreatment. You’re such a good person, and they don’t appreciate you. Not like me-I’m the only one who truly cares about you.”
Layla had to hand it to him. The guy really knew how to commit to the bit.
[Thank goodness Prince Oliver is with Stella. I can’t imagine how much worse she’d feel otherwise.]
[What are the Wolf Boss and General Hartwell even doing? Why aren’t they protecting Stella? Why are they helping Layla?]

[I mean… Layla’s salt really is cheaper.]
[This isn’t about price! They should stand by Stella no matter what! Her position should be their position’ She’s their mate!]
[This is all Layla’s fault. She’s just trying to steal other people’s mates.]
Layla ignored the departing Stella and the Stellights screaming in the chat. She turned to Emily and Talia.
What about you two? Staying to work, or leaving?”
Emily’s gaze followed Stella for a long moment, her eyes flickering with something Layla couldn’t quite
read.
At the sound of her name, she turned back. She glanced at the three males beside her. Seeing no objection from any of them, she nodded. “We’ll stay and work.”
Talia didn’t even bother asking Sebastian or Felix. “We’ll work too.”
Not that she needed to. Both of her mates had already spent days foraging wild greens for Layla in exchange for salt. “We’ve got enough salt for now, though. This time, we want something else.”
“Name it.” Layla genuinely liked Talia’s attitude.
Half the internet called her unfeminine, ungentle, not soft enough. She’d never let it bother her. She did things her way, completely unbothered by the noise.
That was a strong female right there.
And the males beside her, Sebastian and Felix, had never once complained about her, even when her reputation was at its worst.
“How do you make your jerky? I’d like to trade for some.” Talia glanced at Sebastian.
She was a rabbit beastkin. Felix was a cow beastkin. Both herbivores. But Sebastian was a canine. Dogs did better with some meat in their diet.
She and Felix weren’t strictly vegetarian either. But none of them were particularly good cooks. Sebastian was a big shot back on Planet Central-he mostly lived on nutrient solution and rarely ate fresh food. He’d been eating raw meat for weeks now, and Talia felt bad for him.
