Chapter 106 In the Dark
When Layla lay down, the bed was still cold. Then Shane scooted up behind her. “Layla, I’m so cold.”
He wrapped his arms around her from behind, sliding his right hand under her neck for her to use as a pillow, and rested his left hand on her waist.
“Shh.” Layla swatted his arm. “Don’t talk.”
Shane shrank back slightly, then leaned in close to her ear. “You’re so mean to me.”
[So gross.]
[Zero shame left.]
[So this is the real Prof. Slater.]
“Layla.”
“Shane! If you’re not going to sleep, get out!”
[Someone got yelled at.]
“Layla, I feel terrible. Everyone was staring at you today. And then you yelled at me.”
That made her feel a tiny bit guilty.
“Should they be staring at you or at me?”
“They shouldn’t stare at you either.” He held her tighter and murmured, “I only let you look at me. You only let me look at you. Deal?”
Layla was speechless. “Shane. Act normal.”
The corner of his mouth twitched. His tone leveled, yet his next words were still far from normal.
“Don’t fall for George.”
“When have I ever fallen for George?”
A smug little smile tugged at his lips.
“Or Liam.”
“I haven’t.”
“And Carson’s out too.”
“Shane, is this how you spread rumors about me behind my back?”
She could almost understand George and Liam. At least she’d interacted with them.
But Carson? She’d barely exchanged two sentences with him. Where on earth did Shane get the idea she

might fall for Carson?
Shane went quiet.
He was satisfied with her reaction.
Layla closed her eyes, thinking he’d finally settled down.
She was just drifting off when she felt his arm tighten around her waist. His voice came again/stubborn and low. “Don’t fall for them later, either.”
[Holy hell.]
[Prof. Slater, you’ve got serious yandere potential.]
[I thought they were sleeping. I was almost out myself. Layla, hit him for us.]
The live chat would be disappointed. Layla turned over to face him. She reached up and brushed the stray hairs from his face. “Why don’t you feel safe?”
Shane froze for a moment. Then he caught her hand and pressed a kiss to her fingers. “I do now.”
“Hmm?” Layla blinked. “That easily?”
“Not easily.” He’d expected her to blow up at him for waking her in the middle of the night. Layla had never had the best temper.
But instead of getting angry, she’d been patient. She’d comforted him.
His night vision was decent. He could see her sleepy eyes. There was no irritation in them. Just a concern. Just guilt, even-as if she blamed herself for not making him feel secure enough.
It was a strange feeling.
And a little addictive.
Layla didn’t pull her hand away. She let it rest against his cheek. “Then sleep. Tomorrow we’re counting on you to build our home.”
Shane held her hand to his face. The coldness in his expression melted away, leaving only warmth. “Okay.”
But Layla still felt a little uneasy. She held his hand and kept talking in a low voice.
Not comforting words, exactly. More like random thoughts.
“I was thinking this afternoon. We’re building this place up so nicely. If we end up leaving someday, won’t it just be handing it over to someone else for free?”
“Yeah.” Shane played along, nodding. “What should we do about that?” The last traces of his unease faded
away.
Layla said someday. She was thinking about their future.
That. Shane thought, was enough.
