Chapter 108 The Stone House
The leftover adobe bricks-the males figured out how to use them to raise the courtyard wall. What had been a wall about headhigh was now over seven feet tall. Even a predator with impressive leaping ability wouldn’t be able to jump over it.
Everyone had put in work, and Layla was generous in return. She gave each of them enough salt to last until the end of the show, plus an extra bag of jerky per cabin.
She also made arrangements with each cabin and the three unattached beastkins. Anything edible- firewood, meat, wild greens-could be brought to her to trade for other goods.
The three unattached beastkins were practically moved to tears when they heard that. They were rough guys; none of them knew how to cook. They’d tried to learn Layla’s jerkyfrying method, but the results were… well. Their brains said, “Got it.” But the moment they actually tried, it all fell apart.
In the end, none of them succeeded. They asked Layla if they could bring their ingredients to her and have her do the cooking, following the same deal she had with Liam-half the ingredients as payment.
Everyone was happy. They gathered up their rewards and headed home, grinning.
Emily was the last to leave. At the gate, she watched the others disappear into the distance, then turned back to look at Layla. “You’re not what I expected.”
Layla was still operating on her “drive a wedge wherever possible” principle. She smiled at Emily, “What did you expect, or what did someone tell you to expect?”
In the original book, Emily eventually had a falling out with Stella. The book never said why-just that Emily betrayed Stella and came to a bad end.
But if they could fall out in the original story, that meant their relationship wasn’t unbreakable. And knowing Stella’s character, even if Emily wasn’t on the side of justice, it was at least a case of one villain turning on another.
That meant there was an opening.
Emily blinked. She understood what Layla was really asking.
Everything she’d known about Layla had come from Stella.
Stella had always told the truth, hadn’t she?
“Layla grew up on Planet Frontier. She’s different from us. It’s not her fault that she doesn’t know proper
manners.
“Layla didn’t mean to break my mother’s favorite vase. She’s used to rough work. Delicate things are hard for her.
“Layla has a temper and can be rough around the edges, but her heart is in the right place.”
At the time, Emily had thought Stella was just too kind. That she was being bullied by this vicious frontier female and still defending her.

Chapter 108 The Stone House
But after spending real time with Layla these past few days, something was starting to dawn on her. Some narratives, perhaps, had been deliberately fed to her from the very beginning.
If one really wanted to speak well of someone, one probably wouldn’t need to use the whole “praise by first blamming” technique. Especially since Stella’s grades had never been anything to write home about.
Meeting Layla’s open, unembarrassed gaze, Emily suddenly felt that this woman, at least, was real.
“I’m heading back.” Emily didn’t linger.
Layla got it. Stella and Emily had been close friends for years. They had too much shared history. Layla couldn’t break all that with just a few words.
That was fine. Let Emily discover Stella’s true nature on her own. It would feel more real that way than i someone told her.
Layla looked forward to the day Emily saw Stella clearly and fought back.
She turned and went back into the yard.
Yates and Shane were both in the cave.
It wasn’t really a cave anymore. It was more like a stone house. The entrance was sealed with a wooden door wrapped in furs. No matter how fiercely the wind howled outside, it barely touched the inside.
The stone house was divided by heated walls into four sections: two bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen that also served as a pantry.
One of the bedrooms was larger-planned from the start for Layla and Shane. The smaller one was for Yates.
Both bedrooms had heated sleeping platforms connected to the chimney from the heated walls. The platforms were linked to the stove in the kitchen. That way, cooking would also warm the platforms, and the heated walls would radiate heat throughout the house.
The shelves filled with jars and pots stood in the kitchen, along with their stockpiled grain, jerky, dried vegetables, and everything else.
In the living room were the table and chairs that Shane had made, plus two clay stoves. On top of the stoves sat small clay kettles that Shane had fired himself, gently steaming.
Yates had added some wild herbs to the water-herbs that were said to strengthen the body. Pikas
