Chapter 109 The Charcoal Kiln

Layla didn’t see Hanna. By the time she heard the noise and ran out, all she caught was a small fox scurrying away in a panic.

[Gotta say, this cave is starting to look pretty cozy.]

[Even more like a family of three now: Just… not quite the usual kind of family of three.]

[Hanna brought the glowgrass and lampgrass. What’s her deal? She wants to be friends with Layla, but she won’t ditch her boyfriend?]

[Ugh, him.]

[Who knows? People get stuck in their own heads sometimes. She knows he’s trash, but she won’t let go. I’ve got a feeling Hanna’s going to pay for this eventually.]

[Hopefully she learns her lesson when she does.]

“What are you thinking about?” Shane picked up the kettle from the stove, flipped over a cup, and poured Layla a mug of water.

He sat down on a stool with a pile of dried grass, weaving it into mats to go directly on the heated platform. A layer of grass mat, then furs on top-that would keep them warm all winter.

“I’m thinking about what else we need for winter.” Layla heard noises from the kitchen behind her. “Is Yates firing up the platform?”

“Yeah. He says if we dry it out fast, we can move in sooner.”

The days were getting colder by the minute.

Beastkin didn’t get cold as easily as wild animals, but freezing weather still drained their energy. They grew sluggish and craved hibernation.

Food and shelter were sorted. As for travel, they were beastkin. Any vehicle they could cobble together by hand would be slower than just running on their own four legs. Not worth the effort.

Clothing was another matter. They had plenty of furs. They could wrap themselves in those.

Not that Layla wanted to settle for that. She just didn’t know how to make clothes. And neither did any of the beastkins she’d met so far.

Oh well. She was still doing better than most.

Layla thought for a moment and decided to make charcoal.

She was a woman of action. The moment an idea came to her, she got to work.

They’d stockpiled a lot of firewood over the past few days. The stronger males had already chopped it for her. No extra work needed.

She didn’t go far. Just outside the yard, she dug a simple kiln-basically a pit. Shallow on the left, deeper on

the right. On the left, she dug out a fire mouth. On the right, a chimney.

Layla’s different from other females. She’s got muscle, and she’s not afraid to use it.]

[My grandma says with that kind of brute strength, it’s a shame she’s not shoveling manure.]

[Can someone explain what she’s doing? I’m completely lost.]

[Layla is working. And you are not understanding? That’s normal. None of us understands either.]

[Looks like she’s digging a grave.]

[Can’t be. Graves don’t come with two vents. The rats would eat the body.]

Layla ignored the live chat. She didn’t even acknowledge Liam standing nearby. Once the kiln was dug, she started stacking the chopped wood vertically in the pit.

Liam watched for a while, then wandered over and poked at the chimney wall. A chunk of dirt crumbled off.

Layla’s head snapped up. She grabbed a piece of wood and swung it at his hand.

Liam snatched his hand back. “Wow. Quick temper.”

“Fix it.” Layla pointed at the clod of dirt that had fallen into the flue, her eyes full of menace. “Or I’ll stuff you in there.”

Liam didn’t doubt for a second that she would. “Fine, fine. I’ll fix it.”

He grabbed a stick from beside Layla and poked it down the chimney, trying to knock the dirt loose.

But Liam had never had a very accurate sense of his own strength. He pushed too hard. The dirt clod didn’t budge, but the soil above it crumbled and rained down.

He didn’t need to look up to imagine how angry Layla was.

“Hey… this thing you built, it’s pretty shoddy, isn’t it?”

Layla kicked at him.

Liam dodged. “Okay! Don’t lose your temper. Tell me what to do, and I’ll do it.”

Shane heard the commotion and came outside. He found Liam practically pinned to the ground by Layla, holding a small mallet and carefully tamping down the chimney walls.

“If any more dirt falls out, Liam, I’m putting you in there.”
