Chapter 162 The Wolf Boss Steps In
[Everyone on this show knows Caleb is bad news. They all keep their distance from him. Only Stella cozies up to him. Was this her first time getting tangled up with him? Wasn’t she the one calling him “Cal” just last time? Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.]
[I used to hate the phrase “where there’s smoke, there’s fire,” but now it actually rings a little true. If you hang out with someone like that, aren’t you basically admitting you’re like that too? She probably knew all along. Caleb never lifts a finger to work. Suddenly he has jerky? Who wouldn’t question that?]

[We already told you, Stella had no idea the stuff was stolen! Stella is just pure-hearted, not twisted and suspicious like all of you. What did she do wrong?]
Stella echoed the same defense. She shook her head, flustered and aggrieved. “I really didn’t know. I never thought the jerky could be stolen. I’ve never met anyone who would do that before.”
Because she’d never met a thief before, she’d never considered that Caleb’s jerky might be stolen.
It was plausible.
But Layla had no intention of letting this slide so easily.
She stood up, about to speak, when a knock sounded at the door.
Liam, sitting nearest the entrance, got up and opened it. Carson stood there, a bag in each hand.
He stepped inside and set them on the table, opening them to reveal two bags stuffed full of jerky.
He looked at Layla. “In this matter, Stella may have been deceived, but ultimately, it happened due to her lack of judgment. The extra is our compensation to you. Is that acceptable?”
“Carson…” Stella, eyes still red, drifted toward him and reached for his sleeve. “I’m so sorry. I really didn’t know… I’ve caused so much trouble.”
Carson, coincidentally, lifted his hand at that exact moment to pat her shoulder, and her fingers closed on empty air. “It’s good you know you were wrong. Be more careful in the future.”
Stella froze. Carson was dodging her.
But then the touch landed on her shoulder, steadying her. That must have been a coincidence.
She nodded. “I understand.”
Carson gave Stella a brief moment of reassurance, then looked back at Layla. “Is my proposed solution acceptable?”
Carson had helped Layla with chores before. Setting aside all the absurd history with the original Layla, their relationship was actually decent.
Layla pressed her lips together, weighing the pros and cons.
Stella had already spun her story. The Grant family had hired trolls to clear Stella’s name.

Pushing the issue further would yield no results.
She might as well give Carson some face.
With that thought, she rose and offered a smile. “The Wolf Boss has spoken. What more can I say?”
She didn’t mention Stella. The hostility between her and Stella was palpable to anyone paying attention.
And Carson was no naive fool. He could certainly see that Layla felt nothing but loathing for Stella.
That was exactly the impression she wanted to leave with Carson. She was agreeing purely as a favor to Carson. Carson owed her one.
Carson caught her implication and nodded with a smile. “Thank you very much. Consider this a favor I owe you.”
Content, Layla understood why Carson had built such a successful business.
With the jerky Carson delivered, the matter was settled. Anyone present could see the truth of it, and Layla said no more.
Carson left, taking Stella with him.
Layla escorted Hanna back to her tent, intending to retrieve the stolen jerky.
Blaze marched Caleb along behind them.
When they reached Hanna’s tent, she didn’t go inside to get the jerky. Instead, she took Layla’s hand. “Layla… can you stay with me for a bit?”
She held Layla’s hand and looked up at her, her red eyes pleading. “I want to make things clear with him.”
Layla’s heart softened. She could imagine how hard this decision was for Hanna.
Saying a formal goodbye to twenty years of her life, feeling tangled, conflicted, even a little scared, that was all perfectly normal.
But the Hanna Layla remembered from the original book was no fragile weakling. She wouldn’t have been able to rise again from a devastating photo scandal otherwise.
“Okay. I’ll stay with you.” Layla squeezed Hanna’s hand. “Don’t worry. After today, everything will be better.”
Hanna looked at Layla’s gentle expression and couldn’t help remembering how she’d once argued with Layla over Caleb.
