“Think on it yourself.” Shane turned and started to walk back.

He wanted to see Layla.

He wanted to tell her he now knew she was right.

Suddenly, Liam grabbed his sleeve from behind. “Shane. You weren’t like this before.”

“Yes.” Shane nodded without turning around.

“Is it… because of her?”

Shane whirled around. “What do you want? Don’t even think about Layla.”

“Did you warn George like that too?” Liam smiled suddenly.

Though his youthful face didn’t seem intimidating, the glint in his eyes unnerved Shane.

“Layla doesn’t like George.”

“Does she really not like him?” Liam’s tone was soft. “Or do you know better than I that it’s simply a misunderstanding? What if I helped clear that up…?”

“Liam!” Shane grabbed him by the collar, pressing him down. “What do you want?”

Shane was slightly taller. The way he loomed down radiated menace.

But Liam seemed not to notice at all. His smile didn’t flicker. He didn’t push Shane’s hand away. “I don’t want to do anything. Just wanted to ask for a small favor.”

“Oh?”

“The Starcore Ore still needs to be found. And once found, give it to me first.”

“Give it to you. Then what?” Shane’s voice was cold. “Who will you find to process it?

“The Grant family? You probably don’t know this, but the Grant family has long belonged to the Empire. One of Stella’s mates, after all, is Prince Oliver.”

Liam’s expression darkened. “That’s my business. Just tell me if you’ll agree.”

“General Hartwell, even without the threat, I would fulfill your request.”

Shane’s response left Liam stunned. “Why?”

“You don’t need to know.” Shane turned to walk away.
