Chapter 181 The Scent of Broth
Hanna and the others were frying jerky on the other side, and the kitchen was soon thick with savory
aromas.
Even Emily couldn’t resist drifting toward Layla. “That smells incredible. Even if you don’t win Planet A13. you could make a fortune just opening a restaurant.”
“I’ll take that as a blessing.” Layla replied with a smile. You all keep at it. I’m going outside to help Liam slice the beef.”
“Then I’ll go check for wild greens!” Yates raised his hand.
There wasn’t much meat left to process. Emily and Hanna could easily finish before dinner on their own
“Alright. All meat and no vegetables, I’m actually getting a little sick of it,” Layla said, patting Yates on the shoulder with a smile. “Don’t wander too far. Watch out for danger.”
“Got it. Don’t worry, Layla. I’ll just poke around near home. I’ve been getting a lot stronger lately. I can run fast now. If anything happens, I can make it back in time.”
Yates hoisted his enormous basket onto his back and headed out.
[Every time I see Yates heading out with that basket, I feel like I’m watching a kid go off to collect scrap.]
[That basket is way too big. When Prof. Slater wears it, I don’t think twice. But on Yates, it looks like it’s going to crush the poor kid.]
[Don’t worry. Prof. Slater and others use those baskets to haul dirt. Yates only fills his with wild greens. It’s not heavy. Won’t break him.]
[Come to think of it, everyone’s so good to Yates. They all treat him like a little kid.]
[He’s the youngest one here. Four months younger than Hanna, not even twenty yet.]
[Yates is too well-behaved. I heard he was a dancer before. I thought it’d be something elegant, like traditional dance. Turns out he’s a street dancer, a total firestorm on stage. Completely different from this. How does Yates have two completely different faces?]
Layla watched Yates leave, then made her way into the courtyard. She stood across from Liam and joined him in slicing the meat.
“Yates is off foraging for greens again?”
“We can’t have gumbo with just meat,” Layla said.
Liam made a noncommittal sound. He kept his head down, slicing, but the corner of his eye never left Layla.
Layla’s attention was entirely on the meat. She had no idea someone was watching her.
“So, are people from Planet Frontier all this good at cooking?” He was clearly grasping for conversation.

Layla didn’t notice. She assumed he genuinely didn’t know much about life on Planet Frontier
“Life on Planet Frontier is hard. Cooking takes too much time. Downing a tube of nutrient solution takes one minute. One cooks a meal, which starts with buying ingredients, then cooking, eating, and then cleaning the kitchen. The whole process takes at least an hour.
“The rich can afford to slow down and enjoy life. The poor don’t have that luxury. Every single minute has to be spent making money.”
Liam looked up. “It must have been hard for you back then, right?”
Layla blinked. “It certainly was.”
She wasn’t sure if he meant her or the original Layla.
But life had been tough regardless.
The original Layla, raised on Planet Frontier, suffered abuse from her foster mother.
And herself, when the apocalypse hit, she’d been nothing but a college student who hadn’t even graduated yet, forced to survive in a world gone mad. It would be impossible to say she hadn’t suffered.
“I’m sorry,” Liam said quietly.
Layla looked up. “Huh?”
But by the time she raised her head, Liam had already lowered his and resumed slicing.
The apology had been soft, scattered by the wind, as if it had never been spoken at all.
Then, just as Layla was about to go back to her own work, Liam lifted his head again.
Their eyes met. She saw guilt in Liam’s expression, along with an emotion she couldn’t place.
“I said, I’m sorry.”
Layla blinked, momentarily caught off guard. “What are you apologizing for?”
If this was an apology to the original Layla, there was no need. The original Layla was gone. She was the one occupying this body now.
