Chapter 180 Gumbo
Survival Stow
“Deal!” Layla nodded with a smile, then circled the room. “Then let’s have gumbo
[What’s gumbo?]
“It’s the boiled meat and vegetables we had before. Last time, Talia and the others sent over some chili peppers. We can kick up the flavor.”
As it happened, there was still one whole water buffalo left untouched. Layla stopped Liam, who was readying his knife. “Don’t process this one the same way. Skin it, debone it, and slice it thin, We’ll cook the slices right in the gumbo.”
Liam looked up at Layla.
Whenever food was mentioned, her eyes sparkled.
And the way she’d interacted with her fans just now, soft, warm, drawing the eye irresistibly.
He really didn’t like Stella.
But canceling the engagement wasn’t necessary either.
The person in front of him was rather wonderful.
“Fine.” He readied his knife but paused. “Wait, roughly how much should I slice?”
Layla lifted her head and looked at him like he was an idiot. “How much can you eat? Don’t you know? We’ll be lucky if this one head is enough!”
Liam pouted. Layla was being a little too blunt, not giving him any face. But this was Layla.
“How thick?”
“Not too thick.”
Liam handed her the knife. “Show me.”
Layla took the knife and made a cut. Smooth, practiced movements. Soon she had a plate of paper-thin slices.
“This thin? This water buffalo is huge. How long will it take me to slice it all by myself?”
He had a point. Even if Liam was working for free, she still couldn’t work a man like a draft horse.
“I’ll go get the broth started. When I’m done, I’ll come help you.”
“Alright.” Liam nodded, satisfied. “Don’t take too long.”
[Am I the only one sensing General Hartwell has ulterior motives?]
[Same. Did you see? When Layla said she’d come help, he couldn’t keep his mouth from tugging up.]

Layla, be careful. I suspect this male wants your body.]
[Wow. You guys are already calling General Hartwell “this male”?]
[Filthy male! Yates even said the other day that he smelled. I think he’s not good enough for our Layla
Layla had no idea her popularity had soared this high.
Before, when everyone was screaming for her blood, her merely standing near those males would get her torn to shreds. As if her proximity would defile them.
Now, there were people taking her side, saying those males weren’t worthy of her.
This was truly a dramatic transformation.
Unfortunately, Layla didn’t see the outpouring of support.
At that moment, she was preparing the seasonings while narrating
“Onions, ginger, garlic, star anise, cinnamon, bay leaves, fennel…”
. She listed each one, holding them up for the Vanguard.
The Vanguard, well-trained, followed the point of her finger, capturing every detail.
[God. Now I can’t get the image of her hands out of my head. How did I never notice before how beautiful Layla’s hands are?]
[My mind is full of nothing but impure thoughts. I can’t even focus on the fennel or what.]
[I can’t even imagine how amazing it would feel if those hands touched me.]
[You’re pathetic. I can imagine it. Wife! Slap me!]
“The most important seasonings are the chili. Conditions are limited right now, so these are all we have. When I get more seasonings in the future, I’ll introduce those too.
“Or, when Planet A13 is mine in the future, you can all come find me. I’ll make them for you in person.”
[That’s a promise! I’m recording this. Don’t even try to weasel out of it.]
“I won’t. I guarantee once you come, you won’t want to leave. I’ll keep every one of you here.”
Layla’s thinking had undergone some evolution.
But her understanding of this world was still limited. Whether her ideas could actually work, she’d need to discuss it with Shane tonight.
Shane was a native. He knew the rules of this world far better than she did.
Unconfirmed plans shouldn’t be aired to her fans.
