Chapter 183 A Conspiracy in the Capital
After a few more words of comfort from Paxton, Ciara’s expression finally eased somewhat. But the fury still simmered.
“But look at Shane! He’s been completely bewitched by Layla. Does he have any thought left in his eyes or his heart for Stella?
“And George! He says he likes Stella, but what’s the result? Every day, he finds an excuse to drift toward Layla. When he gets something good, does he ever think to bring it to Stella? How can I trust a male like that to give Stella happiness?
“And the most infuriating one is Liam. He went public and said he doesn’t like Stella. He was the one who came begging for the engagement. Now he’s the one publicly humiliating her. A washed-up general, and he actually thinks he’s someone important. Thank goodness Stella didn’t hear what he said. How heartbroken would she be?”
At the mention of Liam, a flash of fury shot through Paxton’s eyes.
Liam’s words on the live broadcast had been nothing less than a public declaration that the person he liked was not Stella.
It didn’t just humiliate Stella. It stomped the entire Grant family into the dirt, turning them into the laughingstock of Planet Central’s elite circles.
Tonight, at the banquet Paxton attended, more than a few people had approached him under the guise of “inquiring about the situation,” solely to mock him.
The original plan had been for Stella to appear on the show with five mates, a display of the Grant family’s next-generation power. Instead, the Grant family had reaped not prestige, but utter disgrace.
But none of this was Stella’s fault. The fault lay with those males who had betrayed her.
Especially Liam. Paxton pulled Ciara into his arms. “I will make him pay.”
“You said that before. That Quetzalcoatlus didn’t manage to kill them.”
“This is different.” Paxton patted Ciara’s shoulder. “The Quetzalcoatlus targeted Layla. And the only ones targeting Layla are us.
“But we aren’t the only ones targeting Liam. In this Empire, there are far too many people who want Liam dead. Don’t worry. I’ll find a way to send Stella a message. Have her cooperate a little. I guarantee, even if Liam doesn’t die, he’ll be crippled.”
A spark of murderous intent flickered in Paxton’s eyes, faint, but venomous.
“When the time comes, even if Liam comes begging to us, we won’t let him go. He was unrighteous first. We’re only responding in kind.”
The idea of destroying Liam utterly gave Ciara a moment’s pause. But not only did she not object, a smile spread across her face. “When that happens, let’s see who dares not take me seriously.”
She tugged at Paxton’s collar. “Move fast. I can’t wait to see how Liam meets his end.

“Let’s see if Layla will still care about him then.”
“Still, remind Stella to be careful when she acts. Don’t get caught,” she added. Then, tears suddenly welled in her eyes. “Ah, my poor Stella. Ever since she was small, she’s never endured this kind of grievance. She’s always been the princess everyone adored. When this show ends, I will make every single person who bullied her pay the price.”
Far away on Planet A13, Layla had no idea that she and Liam had once again been marked.
After Liam declared on the live stream today that he didn’t like Stella, he had shamelessly dug in his heels, flatly refusing to return to Stella’s place.
Shane had no intention of letting him stay the night. The stone house was only so big. His reasoning was solid.
Liam didn’t push. He pointed up at the treehouse. “I’ll just stay there.”
Layla looked up. “It’s freezing up there.”
“Then I’ll stay with you guys…”
Before he could finish, Shane interrupted sharply, “Don’t even think about it!”
“Are you being heartless? We’re friends!”
As Layla attempted to speak, Shane grabbed her wrist, pinning it behind her back while glaring at Liam. “No way!”
“Can’t we discuss it?”
“Not at all!”
“Fine.”
Shane’s refusal was too absolute. Liam could only fall silent and let it go. Push any further and he felt certain Shane would make a scene.
“I’ll find somewhere else to stay myself.” He thought it over and decided to head back to Stella’s.
After all, his stuff was still there. Even if he was moving out, he needed to retrieve his belongings.
That was his stuff. There was no way he’d let anyone else have it.
With that thought, he shook out his sleeves and headed back to Stella’s.
Watching him give up so easily, Layla felt an inexplicable pang of discomfort.
But before she could even process it, Shane took her by the hand and pulled her into the stone house.
After the meal, everyone had pitched in to clean up before leaving.
By the time the two of them entered, Yates had already prepared drinks.
