Chapter 194 A Tremor He Couldn’t Control
The wound, caused by an animal’s horn piercing through the skin, had jagged edges rather than clean ores The edges looked serrated, and some hairs had been forced into the wound, which she had to pick out one by one.
Afraid the military knife would injure Liam further, Layla used only her fingertips, carefully pulling the debris free. She bent lower and lower to see clearly.
Her warm breath brushed against her soft belly, ruffling the fine downy hairs.
Her nails brushed the wound’s edge. Whether the pain had numbed from enduring too long or the injury truly didn’t hurt as much anymore, only a spreading, tingling itch rippled from the site.
With her head bowed, strands of hair fell across her cheeks, giving her a disheveled beauty.
Sunlight filtered through the branches, flecking her face, haloing her in light. She looked so sacred that one couldn’t take their eyes off her.
Suddenly, he realized with a start that a certain part of his body was beginning to misbehave.
Despite his efforts to suppress it, the sensation intensified, causing his hind legs to draw together involuntarily.
Shane’s attention was still on Layla. He hadn’t noticed. Feeling Liam’s legs disobey again, he simply pushed them wider. “Stop moving.”
Liam didn’t want to move. But if he didn’t move soon, it would be too late.
“Wait… just a moment. My leg’s cramping.” His voice was low, edged with something like begging. “Pause. Let me breathe.”
Shane shifted his gaze from Layla to Liam, meeting his fearful, panicked eyes, and for a moment, a shared understanding passed between them.
As a male himself, Shane grasped Liam’s predicament.
He released Liam’s legs and tugged Layla’s arm. “Let him rest for a moment. He has a cramp.”
Layla shot Liam an annoyed glance, muttering, “Useless.”
Still, holding that position so long really could cause cramps. So despite the insult, she stood and stepped back two paces.
“Alright, let’s take a break then.”
Straightening up, Layla let out a long breath. Crouching so long had left her own back aching.
Shane positioned himself in front of Liam, blocking Layla’s view of anything untoward.
But the look he shot Liam was glacial.
Liam, mortified, turned his head away, not daring to meet Shane’s eyes.

Chapter 194 A Tremor He Couldn’t Control
About ten minutes passed before he murmured, “I’m fine now.”
This time, without Shane having to manhandle him, he spread his hind legs himself, exposing the half- treated wound.
“Bear with it.” Layla said. “I’ll finish it all at once, then bandage you up.”
Liam didn’t need to be told. This time, he was determined to endure to the end. He couldn’t take this torture much longer.
He shut his eyes, forcibly ignoring the sensation on his abdomen.
Shane, seeing he was no longer stuck shut like a clam, stopped holding him.
“Who did this? Do you know?” Shane crouched by Liam’s head.
Liam shot him a grateful look. Shane was helping him distract himself.
The topic was still excruciating, but at least it was a serious one.
“I have a guess.” With real business at hand, the touch on his belly became fractionally more bearable.
“A guess?” Shane scoffed. “General Hartwell, you don’t even know who targeted you, and you plan to get revenge?”
“What revenge?” Layla asked, hands still working. “Were all those messy things on your body done on purpose by someone?”
“What else could it be?” Shane replied disdainfully.
Layla had a sudden impression: right now, in Shane’s eyes, Liam was just another useless student.
“Tell us, then. We’ve got time.”
Liam recounted his father’s death in battle and how the Empire had confined him to Planet Central to suppress the Hartwell Legion’s growth, preventing him from seeing combat.
He also touched on his marriage of convenience with the Grant family for financial gain.
“So, you don’t like Stella. You just want the Grant family’s power and influence?” Layla asked.
