Chapter 195 The Weight of Duty
At the very least, he’d never abandoned her after using her.
“Don’t you think I’m despicable?” Not seeing the reaction he’d braced for, Liam was genuinely confused.
Layla raised her eyebrows, surprised. “Why would my opinion matter to you?”
Both males froze at the question.
Liam stared at her in shock. Shane stared at Liam with open wariness.
Layla’s question had just served him a sharp reminder.
Liam must care about Layla’s opinion because he likes her, obviously.
He’d had his eye on her for a while, but it had always been subtle.
Even Layla hadn’t noticed. Only Shane had been on guard.
Liam had been testing him all along, but as far as crossing the line goes, there was nothing, not even in his words.
He hadn’t expected Liam to suddenly start saying such easily misinterpreted things to Layla today.
Perhaps sensing Shane’s vigilance, Liam was silent for a long moment. Then he dropped his gaze. “Nothing. Just asking.”
He couldn’t afford to offend Shane.
Shane wouldn’t let him near Layla.
Layla was wonderful. She made him want to pursue her despite himself.
But he had more important things.
If he were just Liam, not the sole heir of the Hartwell family, not the last hope of the Hartwell Legion, he could be reckless, unconstrained by Shane’s leverage.
But he wasn’t just Liam. He carried the hopes of the Legion on his back. He couldn’t be selfish.
He couldn’t afford to cross Shane.
His feelings for Layla were impure. So he wasn’t worthy.
Shane hadn’t expected Liam to retreat at the very threshold.
“You…” He hesitated.
Liam slowly dropped his head, avoiding Shane’s eyes.
Shane’s brow furrowed. But if Liam wouldn’t speak, Shane was content to let it lie.

Still, Liam constantly eyeing his betrothed mate was infuriating.
Layla waited. The two males opened their mouths, but neither said a word.
She pressed her lips together and didn’t push further.
Shane turned to see Layla lifting the hem of her outer garment, positioning her knife toward the inner layer.
He grabbed her hand. “What are you doing?”
“Cutting a strip to bandage his wound,” Layla explained. Given the conditions, this was all they could do
Shane’s eyes darkened.
Shane’s expression darkened. He had never touched Layla’s clothes like that. He wouldn’t allow Liam to do.
“Use mine.” He took the knife and tore a strip from his own hem. “You only brought two sets. Every rip is one less.”
The discovery that she’d only brought two outfits had been one of the turning points, the moment his impression of her had truly solidified into something positive.
In his experience, females loved buying clothes.
Layla was nothing like other females.
She wasn’t delicate, vain, or capricious. She was well-educated, sensible, and strong-willed.
The more he looked, the more he liked.
The more he looked, the more he wanted to hide her away.
But Layla was a person, not a collectible. She had her own thoughts and could choose her own way of living.
And he, having chosen Layla, had to respect her choices, let her do what she loved.
A beautiful pink spoonbill belonged in the open sky, flying free, not trapped in a cage.
The knife sliced through Shane’s hem. He tore the strip and handed it to Layla.
She bent down, ready to bandage Liam herself, but Liam lifted a hoof and pointed at Shane. “Let him do it.”
Layla paused, then passed the cloth to Shane. “You do it, then.”
Shane, momentarily thrown, caught Liam’s eye. He took the strip.
With one hand, he lifted Liam. With the other, he wrapped the cloth around the wound.
Once around, then tied in a dead knot against his back.
Layla frowned at the result. “That’s so ugly.”
She wasn’t wrong. It wasn’t even a bow.
