Chapter 197 Permission Granted
Just when Shane thought he had grasped the truth, Liam spoke again. “Because I’m not worthy

“She deserves wholehearted love. Not someone who puts her second.”
When he’d been engaged to Stella, he’d felt no guilt. It was a business arrangement, a political marriage, a mutual benefit.
But with Layla, he couldn’t bear to shortchange her.
Shane had run through every possibility. He’d never anticipated this answer.
Because Liam couldn’t give Layla his undivided love, he felt unworthy. That was why he couldn’t bring himself to confess.
Shane suddenly felt like a truly selfish person.
Liam had every right to like Layla.
Layla had every right to like Liam.
What’s more, Layla was the true heiress to the Grant family.
And the one betrothed to Liam was the future head of the Grant family
No rule said that the future head could only be Stella.
And now, Shane didn’t believe for a second that Stella could win against Layla if it came to a real fight.
So actually, Liam and Layla were the true, legitimate match.
They even had a verbal engagement.
“Who targeted you? Who was it?” Shane asked.
“Who do you think?” Liam countered.
Shane hated riddles. “This involves Layla. If danger is constantly circling you, I can’t possibly agree to let you be with her.
“Liam, if you want to be with Layla, you have to at least know who your enemy is. Then we can face them together.
“Layla is the person I hold in my heart. I really do love her. I won’t let anyone put her in danger. Every single person who tries to hurt Layla, once we’re off Planet A13, I will settle with them. One by one.”
Shane’s mouth moved, words pouring out.
But after the first sentence, a roar of white noise filled Liam’s head. The rest was completely lost.
When Shane finally stopped, Liam looked at him with pure, stunned elation. “You mean you’re letting me be with Layla?”

“No!” Shane’s eyes went sharp. “What part of anything I said means I’m letting you be with Layla?”
“Then what did you mean?”
“General Hartwell, your reading comprehension is deeply concerning. I’m starting to think you’re unworthy; of Layla again.”
“I…” Liam was speechless. After a long, agörized pause. he ventured, “So, what exactly do you mean? Please, enlighten me.”
“You have the right to pursue her. But if Layla doesn’t consent, you absolutely cannot force/her.” Shane aid it out.
Liam’s eyes flew wide.
Those dewy eyes brimmed with incredulous joy. He even nudged his antlers further into Shane’s hands.
He thought Shane liked to play with his antlers.
Shane recoiled in distaste. “Now. Can you tell me who targeted you?”
“Stella,” Liam said.
Shane’s eyes went huge. “Say that again. Who?”
“Stella,” Liam repeated it, firm and absolute.
“How? Doesn’t she like you?”
“Because I said, publicly, that I don’t like her.” Liam’s mouth curved upward into a cold, sardonic line. “Do you think the Grant family could tolerate me humiliating them like that?”
Shane was silent for a moment. Lately, his mother had mentioned bits and pieces about the Grant family’s dealings.
Back when she’d assumed he had feelings for Stella, she’d quietly investigated the girl.
To put it simply, his mother was not satisfied with Stella.
In fact, she was eighty percent dissatisfied.
But if he truly wanted Stella, if he was absolutely set on her, his mother could accept her.
Though she’d be very reluctant, she would accept Stella for her only son.
After the show began, as his entanglement with Layla deepened, his mother, watching the live stream, had grown fonder and fonder of Layla. Before he’d even confessed his feelings, she’d started casually mentioning Layla’s good qualities.
As if Layla’s goodness needed anyone else to point it out.
He knew better than anyone how extraordinary she was.
