Chapter 265 Panic Above the Precipice
Carson felt Layla’s breathing soften and steady beside him, tilting his head down to watch her sleeping face.
An unconscious smile tugged at his lips at the sight of her peaceful slumber.
Temperatures plummeted sharply deep into the night. Layla shivered violently in her sleep, her body ice cold to the touch when Carson roused awake.
Throwing aside all formalities and unspoken boundaries between their separate camps, he pulled her tightly into his arms without hesitation.
The sudden warmth made Layla snuggle deeper into his chest in her sleep, nuzzling repeatedly against his firm muscles.
So soft and warm.
She burrowed her face fully into his chest, relishing the safe, enveloping warmth.
Carson froze completely at her innocent, sleepy movements, his heart pounding so loud it threatened to burst out of his chest.
The thundering rhythm of his heartbeat stirred Layla awake, though she kept her eyes closed, feigning continued sleep.
She had no intention of moving away-she’d admired Carson’s physique for a long time, and this moment of quiet closeness was too comforting to waste.
Nestling further into his embrace, she let herself sink back into a contented doze.
Assuming she still felt chilled, Carson wrapped his arms around her even tighter in consideration.
For once, Layla had a wonderful dream.
Lost in their quiet, isolated haven, neither Layla nor Carson had any idea of the panic unfolding high above the cliff edge.
After splitting up from Layla, Daisy had raced straight to find Liam and the others.
She ran straight into Oliver first, who spotted her frantic state and the absence of Layla at her side, blocking her path at once.
“Where’s Layla?”
“Wild beasts are chasing her! I need to get help right away!” Daisy panted urgently.
Shock flashed across Oliver’s face.
Without a moment’s delay, he followed Daisy to find Liam, George, and Shane.
After hearing the full story, the five of them rushed full speed to the cliffside.
The beast pack had already scattered by the time they arrived.
Only scattered pink spoonbill feathers and dark dried blood stained the ground.
Liam’s hands trembled at the gruesome sight.
George sprinted forward, clutching a handful of Layla’s fallen feathers, his eyes turning bloodshot and teary.
“Those damned creatures… they couldn’t have hurt Layla… they couldn’t have…” His voice cracked; he was unable to finish the sentence, thick with grief.
Shane stood motionless, his face blank, yet his entire aura turning icy and menacing.
