Chapter 278 Welcome
The footage stored on the chip would serve as irrefutable hard evidence someday.
There was no rush to expose everything now-Layla was waiting for the perfect moment to seal Stella’s fate completely.
Catching the warm smile in Layla’s eyes, Oliver seized the chance to edge closer.
“Now that Stella’s gone and I have no one left to team up with, can I join your group?”
Before he could finish speaking, Liam grabbed him by the collar, staring him down with obvious hostility. “Are you taking advantage of the chaos to wedge yourself into our group?”
Oliver looked thoroughly offended. “Taking advantage? I didn’t do anything underhanded. I saved all of your lives today.”
Liam let out a cold scoff and glanced at Layla.
None of the group was eager to let Oliver join, yet they couldn’t deny he’d played a crucial role in saving them.
If Layla agreed, they would not object.
Layla pondered quietly for a moment before nodding her consent.
“Fine, you can join us. But you have to pull your weight around camp. If you act as lazy and entitled as you did with Stella, you might as well drop out of the show right now.”
Oliver’s face lit up with delight as he nodded eagerly. “You won’t regret this! I’m far more capable than I look!”
George, Shane, and Liam all twitched their expressions in unison.
Capable? Capable of nothing but stirring up trouble, more like.
Watching Oliver settle down obediently to one side, Layla shook her head helplessly.
She turned to find Carson already gone without a word.
All that remained where he’d stood was a bundle of healing herbs with powerful medicinal properties.
A complicated emotion flickered across Layla’s face as she stared silently at the herbs.
Stepping to stand behind her, Shane spoke softly, “We could go after him if you’d like.”
Layla turned to meet his gaze, catching the quiet worry and faint hurt hidden in his eyes.
Kind and understanding as Shane always was, his generosity stemmed purely from his love for her.
Even so, getting him to say those words on his own still stung.
Layla wrapped her arms around him warmly with a gentle smile. “We’re all homeless for the time being

anyway. Besides, if Carson truly wants to stay with us, he’ll find his way back on his own.”
She patted the top of his head affectionately, lacing her fingers through his hand and leading him back to rejoin the others.
Tournament staff delivered the prefabricated wooden cabin soon after.
Layla inspected it quietly, thinking it paled in comfort and coziness compared to their original treehouse shelter.
After a long, chaotic night, Layla told everyone to rest early.
Long before dawn the next morning, faint rustling sounds echoed outside the cabin door
Layla instantly recognized the familiar presence lingering outside-it was Carson.
Getting out of the bed, she rushed to yank open the door.
Carson had just set down a bundle of supplies and prepared to leave.
Their eyes locked, and awkwardness washed over Carson’s features.
He nodded politely. “Are you unharmed after last night?”
Layla quietly closed the door behind her, pulling Carson aside into the shade of a nearby tree.
“I’m fine. What have you decided to do next?”
Carson hesitated for a long moment before speaking quietly, “I’m considering dropping out of the competition entirely.”
The words spilled out of Layla’s mouth before she could hold back. “Why drop out? Why not join our group instead?”
Silence fell between them instantly, both frozen in surprise.
A faint blush tinted Layla’s cheeks as she stumbled to explain herself, “Oliver just joined us, too. With Stella gone, the competition is already well underway. Quitting now would be such a waste.”
Carson stared at her quietly for a long time before giving a slow, solemn nod. “I’d be honored to join your group, if you’ll have me.”
Layla fought back the urge to jump for joy internally.
There was no way they would ever turn Carson away.
His presence would make their daily survival far easier and more comfortable for everyone, including
himself.
Their group already had a perfect division of labor suited to each person’s strengths.
Carson excelled at hunting, and they would gladly assign that task to him-never forcing him to handle trivial camp chores.
