Chapter 291 Inside the Insectoid Colony
A heavy silence filled the room, broken only by the uneven rhythm of breathing.
Suddenly, George’s voice cut through the quiet, laced with irritation.
“What’s the big idea, dragging me out in the middle of the night?”
Liam’s response was calm and measured. “Can’t I need to talk to you about something?”
With a disgruntled mutter, George followed Liam out, his brow furrowed.
Seizing the opportunity, Vanguard, the only one still ostensibly working, immediately slipped out after them.
The moment the door closed, the suspended breathing in the room ceased. The others rose as one.
A silent glance passed between Layla and Shane before they moved, slipping soundlessly out through the window.
Once outside, Layla produced the golden Carapax Beetle from within her jacket, cradling it in her palms.
The insect pivoted several times before settling on a direction and beginning a slow, deliberate crawl.
Exchanging determined looks with Shane, Carson, and Oliver, the four of them fell into step behind it, their movements ghost-quiet.
The beetle’s pace was agonizingly slow.
They trailed it for what felt like an age, eventually arriving at a small, grassy mound near the energy barrier.
Without hesitation, the golden beetle burrowed into the earth.
Machinery could have excavated a tunnel in minutes, but secrecy was paramount.
They needed another way.
As Layla chewed her lip in thought, Carson shifted beside her.
His form blurred and expanded, reverting to his powerful beast form. His paws, each nearly the size of Layla’s head, were formidable tools.
A single swipe carved a deep gouge in the soil.
A spark of excitement lit Layla’s eyes.
Who would have expected his beast form to be so practical?
“Incredible work, Mr. Fields! Keep it up!” Layla encouraged, her voice a hushed whisper.
The praise seemed to fuel him.
Carson’s digging accelerated, paws moving in a blur until a half-person-sized hole was revealed.

He paused, turning his great head to look at Layla.
In response, she tossed a small ball of crackling energy into the darkness.
The brief flash of light revealed a cavern teeming with startled golden Carapax Beetles scuttling deeper into an expansive space easily large enough for them to navigate.
Nodding her approval to Carson, Layla watched as he resumed his work with renewed vigor, claws tearing through earth and rock until the entrance was fully opened.
A strange, musty odor wafted out, causing Layla to turn her face away slightly, her eyes seeking Shane’s
Shane inhaled deeply, and a gleam of recognition flashed in his eyes.
“Starcore Ore. It’s further in,” he murmured, his voice low with anticipation.
Layla activated a handheld light source, moving to enter first, but Carson gently blocked her path, his low rumble of a voice firm. “Potential danger ahead. I’ll lead.”
His massive frame was like a living shield, and an unexpected warmth bloomed in Layla’s chest.
While protecting her was ingrained in his nature, part of his role, she couldn’t help the instinctive pull she felt toward such raw, protective strength.
There was a primal appeal to it, a draw she found hard to resist.
The tunnel widened as they ventured deeper.
Periodically, Shane would scoop a handful of soil, bring it to his nose, and analyze its scent.
His tone gradually grew heavier. “We’re getting close to the Hive Queen’s chamber.”
In any insectoid colony, a single queen reigned supreme, orchestrating and propagating the hive.
Most Hive Queens possessed human-like cognition, capable of basic dialogue, but they were notoriously hostile to unannounced intruders-exactly what they were.
Yet, with the Starcore Ore as their goal, Shane was willing to risk it.
Soon, even Layla could sense a shift in the atmosphere-a subtle, predatory stillness that raised the hairs on her neck.
Carson raised a hand, bringing the group to an abrupt halt.
An utter, profound silence had descended upon the cavern.
“What’s wrong?” Oliver whispered, confused.
