Every word out of Layla’s mouth hit like a slap across Ciara’s face. She stormed off in a fury, dragging Stella with her.

Layla watched the mother-daughter duo retreat, a cold smile on her lips.

You still haven’t paid back what you owe the original Layla. Not even close.

Ciara brought Stella back to her camp.

Stella pouted, her face twisted with frustration, “Mom, why didn’t you just put Layla in her place back there?”

Ciara let out a cold laugh. “There are a dozen Vanguards pointed at us. If I’d laid a hand on her, the Grant family stock would’ve tanked by morning.”

Stella’s eyes burned with resentment. She knew exactly how popular Layla had become across the entire interstellar audience, and that just made the jealousy cut deeper.

Her expression turned even more venomous. “Mom, I can’t let this go. We have to teach her a lesson,” she said.

Truth was, Ciara had no intention of letting Layla off the hook either. She turned to Stella, her smile every bit as venomous as her daughter’s. “The only thing she’s got going for her is her cooking. What if we made those males of hers walk away?”

Stella’s eyes lit up instantly. She leaned in close to Ciara and dropped her voice. “Mom, what are you planning?” she asked.

Ciara reached out and stroked Stella’s hair with a gentle, almost loving touch, her tone perfectly calm. “Don’t worry about it. Just play dumb.”

Layla was too sharp. If Ciara told Stella the plan and things went south later, Layla would pry it out of her in no time.

Stella, on the other hand, felt like she’d already been avenged. She glanced toward Layla’s cabin and let out a soft, gloating laugh.

Oh, Layla, so what if you’re the real Grant heiress? Mom still loves me more.

You will never, ever set foot in the Grant family.

The frustration that had been weighing on her for days finally started to lift.

Just then, the worker Ciara had brought to rebuild Stella’s mud hut walked over.

He opened up a heavy reinforced case and said deferentially, “Ms. Ciara Grant, please take a look. This is the industrial-strength bonding agent.”

Stella leaned in for a peek, her curiosity piqued. “What is that?” she asked.

Ciara’s voice turned warm and patient as she explained, “You mix this into the mud, and it hardens like steel. Even if Layla tries the same trick again, it won’t do a thing.”

Stella burst out laughing and threw her arms around Ciara’s neck, her voice bright with fake sweetness. “Thank you, Mom. You really are the best.”
