Layla reached out and tapped George lightly on the head, her voice exasperated. “I was just making a comment. What are you overthinking now?”

George clutched his head, his expression sour.

He rubbed his hands together and quietly made his way behind Yates. He tapped him on the shoulder.

Yates turned around and saw George standing there. A flicker of confusion crossed his face, but he asked politely, “Did you need something?”

George nodded, his expression dead serious. He crooked a finger at Yates. “Come with me.”

Yates was baffled, but he followed.

Once they were in the corner, George fixed him with a grave look. “What exactly do you think of Layla?” he asked.

Yates was even more confused now. Still, he answered honestly, “She’s an incredible female. She’s brave, she’s smart, she trusts the people around her without question. She’s really amazing.”

George’s stomach dropped.

This boy is already completely head over heels for Layla.

He tested the waters. “So if you ever look for a mate, you’d want someone like Layla?”

Yates’ face went red. He glanced at George, a little embarrassed. George was acting weird today. They barely talked, and now, suddenly, he was asking all these personal questions. Still, he nodded honestly.

“If that were possible, it’d be a dream come true,” he said.

Yates meant he’d want someone like Layla in the future, not that he was in love with Layla right now. So he nodded without thinking twice.

But in George’s mind, this was a full-blown declaration of war. He ground his teeth.
