“So what?” George shot back, his jaw tight.

Layla felt a spark of curiosity.

In the original novel, George and Stella were the entertainment industry’s golden couple. Fans shipped them hard, and they were completely devoted to each other until the very end.

Why would they have a falling out so fast?

And why is George coming to me?

“What’s the reason?” she pressed.

“What reason?”

To be honest, even George couldn’t fully explain why he’d run to Layla. Maybe he’d finally realized Stella’s true nature wasn’t as harmless as it seemed. She could be selfish.

She knew Liam was giving Layla a hard time because of her. Yet, she only expressed her disapproval or rather, her helplessness-about Liam’s behavior to him, to Carson, to Oliver. She never said a word to Liam himself.

Why? Was she worried Liam would think she was meddling? Or was she afraid that if she spoke up, Liam might actually stop targeting Layla?

It was selfish and fake. Using words and a wounded look to get others to fight her battles, all while playing the victim.

George had been in the industry long enough to recognize a game. From others, he could ignore it. But this was the female he was meant to spend his life with. He couldn’t simply let it slide.

Looking into Stella’s teary, helpless eyes, George suddenly remembered the blazing anger in Layla’s gaze. Even that slap had felt more real.

“Layla, are you starting dinner?” Shane asked, pointing to the raw fish on the table. “It won’t stay fresh much longer.”

Shane’s question pulled Layla from her thoughts. “I’m not letting you stay here.”

Her plan was clear: stay away from the main characters, live a happy life. She wasn’t changing it. George wasn’t surprised. In fact, he found Layla’s blunt refusal kind of refreshing.

In the industry, most people hid their feelings behind fake smiles. Her directness was actually pretty appealing.

[Aaaaah! She actually dared to refuse George! Does she even know who he is?!]

[Refusing him is nothing! She’s already slapped him. But after seeing her fight General Hartwell… If she hit George, she’d better not hit me.]

“Then how about you provide me with food instead?” George bargained. “Just make sure I don’t starve for the rest of the show.”

Layla paused while lighting the fire and glanced at him.

Another one here for food.

“Can’t you catch your own fish?” Liam said, having finished the chicken coop. He bumped George’s arm as he walked over.

Back at Stella’s place, George had brought back two fish like clockwork every day.

“I’m sick of it,” George said, glancing over at Shane who was playing with clay. “Prof. Slater says raw meat has parasites. It’s bad. I plan to eat cooked food from now on, but I can’t cook. I don’t have anyone else to ask, so I can only come to Layla.”

“Deal,” Layla agreed. Then, without another word, she pointed to the entrance. “Let’s start this

tomorrow.”

Liam, having already secured his dinner invitation, walked over and sat next to Shane. He watched Shane shaping the clay. “What are you making, Prof. Slater?”

Shane looked up and gave him a shy smile. “The clay pot I made for Layla before got broken. I’m making her a new one.”

His smile was so innocent, you’d never guess he was throwing shade at Liam.

Layla remembered the pot Liam had smashed. She paused while placing the raw fish on a clay plate and shot Liam a fierce glare.

Liam winced.

I really need to learn when to shut up.

[A man cannot even relate to the person he was three seconds ago.]
