“We have to supply the firewood too, you know,” Layla argued. “Do you have any idea how hard that is to find? And making jerky takes time. It takes me almost a whole day to process a single wolf. I wouldn’t be able to do anything else.

“Look, you know if I went hunting myself, I’d have fresh game every day. I’m only agreeing to help you because of our past ties.”

Past ties? Liam couldn’t recall a single moment in Layla’s past behavior that suggested any such bond.

But he still needed someone to preserve his food. Once winter hit, prey would grow scarce, and no one would want to venture out to hunt.

“Layla,” Shane interjected, “this is a big decision. General Hartwell can’t decide this alone. He should go back and discuss it with Stella.”

[Oh, snap! That’s a direct challenge!]

[But, doesn’t Prof. Slater have a point?]

“You’re talking about ordinary men,” Layla said, turning a sweet smile on Liam. “General Hartwell isn’t ordinary. He can decide something this small on his own. Right, General Hartwell?”

A faint smile tugged at Liam’s lips. “Clever mind games.”

He stepped closer, leaning in slightly, his voice dropping low with quiet amusement. “But they won’t work on me.”

[Aaaaah! He’s so hot!]

[Thank god for survival shows letting me watch an imperial general flirt through a screen!]

[I’m done for! I’m hooked!]

[Kinda cringe, no?]

[On anyone else, maybe. But this is General Hartwell! Even his cringe is top-tier!]

“However, I accept your terms,” Liam said, straightening up with a laugh. “I’ll head back now and bring you game tomorrow.”

With that, he left.

Shane watched him go, his eyes narrowing into cold reptilian slits, and held that gaze for a long

moment.

Layla was too busy eating to notice.

After the meal, they both got to work.

The camp was mostly set up. All they needed now was enough stored food and water to get through the year comfortably.

Liam would supply the meat, and George would bring the water.

Layla leaned back in her chair and let out a low whistle. “You know, I’m starting to think we don’t even have to lift a finger.”

Couldn’t be a better setup.

Shane, who was drying a clay pot by the fire, glanced back at her. “Overconfidence gets you hurt.”

Layla clicked her tongue. “Way to kill the vibe.”

She stood up and checked the chicken coop. Liam’s handiwork was solid; the repaired coop was even sturdier than her original one.

With skills like that, Stella’s group would probably never starve.

What a shame.

Before Layla could finish the thought, George’s voice came from outside the yard.

Shane’s calm eyes instantly shifted back to those vertical serpentine slits as he turned toward Layla, clear displeasure on his face.

But Layla didn’t bother soothing his jealousy. “He’s just here to drop off water,” she said flatly.

Shane pondered this. Her willingness to explain meant she cared about his feelings. And if she cared about his feelings, surely that meant she cared about him entirely?

To Layla, George was nothing more than the water runner.

With that thought, his mood lifted considerably. “I’ll get the distiller ready,” he said.

He had finished building the water distiller a while ago, but they’d been busy building the wall and had only been boiling seawater to drink.

By the time George hauled the seawater over, Shane had the whole setup prepared.

“That was quick,” Layla said, her tone unfriendly toward George. She took the water and tossed him a packet of jerky.

George set the water container down beside Shane, caught the jerky, and tilted his chin at Layla. “Is this all?”

“I only promised you’d be fed. I never said I’d stock up your supplies.”

“Fine,” George said, not fully satisfied.

He didn’t eat much anyway, and this would be enough to last him the entire day.
