[That’s why you gotta watch Layla. Look at Prof. Slater-following her means eating like a king, nine meals a day.]

[He’s really living the freeloader dream. Sometimes I wish I could swap places with him for a few episodes.]

[Hey, that’s not entirely fair. Prof. Slater is useful. He makes clay pots, builds the distiller, and can modify weapons. Can any of you do that? You think Layla just keeps him around for his looks? She wouldn’t waste her time on a useless male.]

[Hey, what’s going on? Did Layla miss?]

The live chat, which had been debating Shane’s usefulness to Layla, suddenly panicked.

The pink spoonbill had been flying along just fine, and the rabbit on the ground was quietly munching grass.

Then, the spoonbill dove sharply.

Hearing the noise, the terrified rabbit took off hopping as fast as it could.

[No wonder they say “run like a rabbit.” That thing is fast!]

[She won’t miss it, will she? She can’t be slower than a rabbit. She had plenty of energy when she was fighting General Hartwell.]

[Maybe she used up all her stamina fighting him?]

[Ugh, I wanted to see her show off.]

[She is showing off. You’re worrying too soon. Look closely-she’s following it.]

The pink spoonbill kept a steady distance in the air, tailing the rabbit until it suddenly vanished into the ground. Only then did Layla land and shift back.

[Wait-is she planning to raid the whole warren?]

[That’s tough. Don’t they say all rabbits have multiple escape routes? What if she misses even this one?]

[Even if she doesn’t, she won’t starve. Have you all forgotten her food stockpile?]

[True. If she misses it, it’s just for fun.]

Remembering Layla’s supplies, the worried live chat calmed down and settled in to watch.

But Layla wasn’t playing around. She was serious.

She knew all about rabbits having multiple exits, and how much they loved to dig. There could be a bolt-hole anywhere.

She found a rock to block the entrance she’d seen, preventing an escape, then searched the area for other openings.

It took a while to find a second hole.

The live chat watched intently as Layla, with no hesitation, lit a few damp sticks and shoved them into the hole. She blocked it with a larger rock and then scanned the area for where the smoke would escape.

[That’s so sneaky!]

[But you gotta admit, it works.]

As the live chat discussed, Layla spotted two thin trails of smoke rising from the ground.

She was grateful the Beast World had no laws sentencing arsonists to life imprisonment.

She blocked one of the smoking holes and then crouched by the last one, ready to ambush the rabbits as they fled.

Animals are more sensitive to smell. It wasn’t long before a plump gray rabbit shot out of the hole, scrambling for its life.

Layla’s eyes lit up. Her hand shot out, grabbing it by the ears. She moved so fast the viewers barely saw it before the rabbit was in her grip.

She tossed it into her basket and settled in to wait.

About half an hour later, she had caught seven rabbits in total-two large ones and five smaller

ones.

Humming a tune, she headed back with her basket, even taking the time to cut some bamboo on the way to build a cage for her new livestock.

When she returned, Shane had collected a clay pot of fresh water.

The pot wasn’t huge, but it was enough for the two of them for a day.

The task didn’t take much effort-just topping it up with seawater occasionally-so it didn’t stop Shane from doing other things.

When Layla got back, Shane was hunched over the table, writing something.

Seeing her, he didn’t ask about her hunt. Instead, he poured her a cup of water. “It’s not purified water, but it’s better than seawater.”

Layla took the cup and drank. “It’s good. At least it’s not bitter and salty.”
