He’d even boasted to Layla that once his interstellar pirate crew arrived, she’d be finished.

If it hadn’t been for Leonard’s help a few days prior, they wouldn’t have escaped at all.

Mia Snow stood with her arms crossed, her gaze icy as it fixed on Nick.

“So useless! You can’t even handle one female,” she said, her voice dripping with cold contempt.

Nick rolled his eyes.

In the past, he might have shared that dismissive view of Layla.

But their last encounter had shattered that illusion. Even without Carson and the others backing Layla up, he knew all too well how easily she could have ended them.

A female of her caliber was rare.

If circumstances were different, Nick might have held a genuine appreciation for her qualities.

She was certainly a far cry from Stella, at any rate.

“If you went up against her yourself, you might not fare any better,” he retorted, a sharp edge to his words.

Tension thickened in the air as the two seemed poised for a full-blown argument.

Gavin quickly stepped between them, playing peacemaker. “Enough, both of you. Save it. If Shane wakes up soon, we need a plan, not a fight.”

His intervention drew their attention.

Mia turned her focus to a small vial in her hand, idly rolling it between her fingers. Inside, a device no larger than a grain glinted, its circuitry impossibly intricate.

George, with his keen eyesight, spotted it immediately.

Oliver’s expression darkened instantly.

That vile thing was designed to be ingested and travel through the bloodstream. It would ultimately embed itself in the brain’s neural pathways, turning its host into a mindless puppet.

They intended to use it on Shane.

If Leonard was here, his brother Roger probably was, too.

The thought of Shane, brilliant and sharp, reduced to a hollow shell, was unthinkable.

Even if Layla would never look down on him, for Shane, this felt like a personal humiliation.

Seeing her resolve, George knew the path forward.

“There’s a network of underground water channels here. I can use them to trigger a collapse and cause a major distraction. That’ll be our window to get Shane out. But you need to be elsewhere. Find someone.”

Meeting her questioning look with uncommon gravity, he added, “Find the Wormhole Queen. See if she can trap them here long enough for us to act.”

A spark ignited in Layla’s eyes.
