Chapter 372 To the Cave

[But are they actually useful right now? What if they crash into the kidnappers, still tipsy?]

[Layla looks solid. If it’s just one guy, she can handle him.]

Under the Vanguard’s gaze, Layla shifted.

Her form dissolved into shimmering light, reforming as a magnificent pink spoonbill..

Iridescent feathers glowed softly in the moonlight.

She glanced back at the men, her voice an ethereal chime. “Get on. We’re losing time.”

To the Vanguard, she added a stern warning. “Follow at a distance. Don’t get close. If things go wrong, you’re our link to help.”

The chat agreed in unison.

[Got it, Layla! We’ll hang back.]

[Smart thinking. We’re the emergency beacon.]

[Don’t want the Vanguard getting smashed.]

With a powerful beat of her wings, Layla rose, carrying her passengers toward the familiar wormhole.

The Vanguard trailed far behind, a solitary speck of light.

Layla had said it on purpose. Once they entered the wormhole, the secret of the Starcore Ore wouldn’t stay hidden anyway. Better to keep the Vanguard at a distance. Protect the secret while she still could.

But if Shane was truly in danger, she’d protect him first. The Starcore Ore could blow-she didn’t care

anymore.

Soon, the wormhole’s eerie entrance loomed before them.

Layla landed gracefully, shifting back to her human form as George and Oliver dismounted.

The mouth of the Starcore Ore cave gaped darkly before them. A foul, corpse-like odor wafted out—a stark contrast to the ore’s usual scent.

George grimaced. “Did it always smell like a crypt in there?”

Layla shook her head, unease coiling in her gut. The stench was new.

During their last visit, only the ore’s fragrance had filled, the air.

They’d been away too long, distracted by Leonard and Stella.

Perhaps the Wormhole Queen’s return has changed things, bringing the scent of her insectoid kin.

Pushing the thought aside, Layla activated her flashlight and stepped inside.

The sound of water echoed from deep within the main ore vein.

She quickened her pace, heading for the hidden passage.

A skittering mass blocked her path-a cluster of Carapax Beetles.

They didn’t attack, merely forming a living barricade.

Layla frowned in confusion.

Their antennae waved insistently toward a narrow, almost invisible fissure in the cave wall beside the main tunnel.

Layla leaned closer. “You want us to go that way?”

The lead beetle dipped its head in a clear nod.

Exchanging a glance with George and Oliver, Layla squeezed into the tight opening.

The repulsive smell faded, replaced by the familiar, honeyed aroma of Starcore Ore.

The path was a cramped, single-file trek, but it gradually widened.

Voices filtered through the stone.

“What now? Force the serum down his throat?”

“He’s full of booze. It’ll be ineffective. Wait till he’s sober.”

“And if Layla’s crew shows up?”

“We have the professor. That’s our leverage.”

Layla froze. She knew that first voice. It was Nick.

She drew a deep breath, her eyes darkening with resolve.

So he and his pirate crew have never left Planet A13. They’ve been hiding, waiting. And now they’ve brought Shane straight to the Starcore Ore cave.
