Hearing Emily’s words, Layla offered no further argument. After securing the long blade at her side, she moved toward the Starcore Ore cavern.

To save time, she shifted back into her beast form and let Oliver and Emily climb onto her back. She then spread her wings and headed toward their destination.

The moment her claws touched down at the cave entrance, a figure hurtled out-George, thrown violently through the air.

Only the cushion of clustered Carapax Beetles broke his fall, sparing him a brutal impact with the ground.

From within the cave echoed a deep, rumbling tremor, as if the stone itself were groaning.

Layla rushed forward, helping the dazed man to his feet.

“Are you hurt, George?” Her voice was tight, shadowed with guilt and worry.

A thin trail of blood escaped the corner of George’s mouth.

He coughed lightly, steadying his voice to ease her concern. “I’ll manage. The Wormhole Queen intervened. She’s pinning down Nick and the others for now.”

Layla gave a nod. “Stay here and rest. Hold the line against any remaining Vanguards.”

George pressed a hand to his aching chest-the task suited him just fine!

“Understood,” he grunted with a firm nod.

Worried the Wormhole Queen’s hold might falter, Layla charged into the cavern.

Inside, chaos reigned. Gavin was surrounded, besieged by a swarm of Carapax Beetles. Their carapaces, fused with Starcore Ore, gleamed with unnatural hardness.

Gavin fought with raw desperation, each swing of his arms only shoving the creatures back momentarily.

He couldn’t crack their shells. Exposed patches of his skin were a bloody mess, torn and gnawed by relentless mandibles.

He spotted Layla, and his bloodshot eyes burned with venom, “Layla! I knew it was you!”

A cold smile touched her lips. “You took one of mine. Did you think I’d just stand by and watch?”

Scorn flashed across his pained face. “This isn’t about him, is it? You just want Prof. Slater around to study the Starcore Ore for you.”

Layla rolled her eyes.

Still trying to stir the pot, even now.

“Save your breath for fighting. You’ll need it,” she said.

Gavin’s eyes flickered with impatience. Again and again, his gaze cut toward the swirling vortex deeper in

the cavern.

Layla understood. He was stalling, waiting for Nick and the others.

But they weren’t coming. Right now, they were almost certainly still tangled up with the Wormhole Queen.

“What are you pirates really after here?” Emily demanded, stepping forward.

Gavin flicked a glance at her, a sneer twisting his lips. “What, your new best friend hasn’t filled you in?”

Emily narrowed her eyes. “Everyone has secrets. Stella was my friend for years and still hid things from me. We’ve only just met-why should I expect Layla to have no secrets from me?”

Layla couldn’t help but feel a flicker of warmth at those words.

Stella really is short-sighted. She doesn’t know how to cherish a friend like that. She’ll regret it one day.

Layla stepped closer to Gavin, her smile cold and sharp. “Still playing stubborn, aren’t you?”

From her pocket, she drew a small vial-the berserker rage serum taken from Stella’s house last time.

Gavin’s expression shifted instantly-a flash of hunger, raw and desperate.

Layla shook the vial gently. “If I’m not mistaken… you’re due for a dose, aren’t you?”

His eyes darkened, fixed on the serum as he swallowed hard.

Days stranded on Planet A13-it had been too long since his last injection.

The need was physical, a grinding ache beneath his skin.

He knew exactly what she was doing: a crude, transparent trap.

Give her the intel and get the serum. Or fight the craving empty-handed.
