Chapter 378 Delusional

This could mean only one thing: unrest within the interstellar pirates.

Many among them lived by a strict code of loyalty. They likely saw Taylor as nothing more than a usurper, a leader who had seized power through treachery.

They probably didn’t respect her authority one bit.

The pieces clicked into place for Layla, forming a plan.

She turned her gaze to Mia, who stood before her, fidgeting with palpable anxiety. A slow smile spread across Layla’s face.

Mia flinched under her stare. “What now?” she asked, voice trembling.

Instead of answering directly, Layla leaned close, her whisper a ghost of sound in Mia’s ear.

Mia’s eyes widened in shock before she began shaking her head furiously.

“If you’re not willing, I can always find another partner. Nick seems far more attached to his life than you are,” Layla said, her tone dropping to a dangerous, honeyed threat.

Mia’s face cycled through fear, anger, and desperation before finally settling into grim resignation. “Fine. I’ll help you. But-”

Layla cut her off with a dismissive wave. “You’re in no position to set terms.”

A flash of pure hatred flickered in Mia’s eyes before she looked away.

While Layla worked on securing Mia’s cooperation, Stella was pacing nervously outside the group’s cabin.

She’d searched everywhere for Layla with no luck.

Rumor had it they were having some kind of dinner gathering, but the place seemed deserted.

After watching her pace back and forth for the fifth time, Carson finally stepped outside. “What do you want?” he asked, his voice flat.

The sight of him still sent a foolish flutter through Stella’s chest.

She managed a demure smile, cheeks tinting pink. “I heard about your dinner. It sounded lovely, and I thought I might… join in for a bit.”

The Vanguard captured her performance perfectly, and the live chat erupted.

[The nerve of this woman! Goes from throwing shade to begging for scraps. I kinda wish I had that level of audacity.]

[Easy for you to say. Cross her mom, and we’ll all be filing for bankruptcy by lunchtime.]

[Serious question though-any updates on who kidnapped Prof. Slater? Has Layla’s team found anything l

Stella’s eyes zeroed in on that last comment.

A slow, cunning smile touched her lip.

Prof. Slater got kidnapped?

If Layla and the others are gone, they must be off looking for Shane.

Stella looked up at Carson, pretending to be genuinely worried, and said, “I just saw on the live chat… is it true? Is Prof. Slater in danger?”

Carson didn’t even look up; his reply was detached. “Layla and the others are handling it. He’ll be fine.”

His perfectly controlled demeanor set off alarm bells in Stella’s mind.

Something’s off.

Who kidnapped him?

If Layla’s group is out searching, why is the production crew so clueless?

A thrilling possibility dawned on her.

Could it be Mom? Did she finally send someone to get back at Layla for me?

The thought was so delicious that Stella could barely contain her glee.

She forced her voice into a lilt of worry. “If Layla’s out there alone, she could be in trouble, too! Maybe I should get some people together to look for her?”

Carson finally lifted his gaze, a cold, dismissive sweep that made Stella shrink back instinctively.

He took a deliberate step forward, his tall frame blocking her view of the cabin entirely.

“We’re busy. Do us all a favor and go back to your own place. Stay there. If you wander around and get into trouble, don’t come running to us.”

Instead of taking it as the blunt dismissal it was, Stella’s heart did a little flip.

He’s worried about me! He doesn’t want me getting caught up in whatever danger is coming.

She clasped her hands together, a dreamy, triumphant smile blooming on her face.

Vanguard took a clear, sharp shot of her like this. The live chat viewers were less impressed.

[Oh my god, does she actually think he’s concerned for her? Look at that smile!]
