Chapter 40 Eat Bones?
:
Layla rolled her eyes at Liam and pointed to two bamboo stalks on the ground. “Make me a cage. I’ll give you an extra deer leg from today’s catch.”
Liam raised an eyebrow. “For what?”
He’d been busy hunting all day and hadn’t had a chance to keep an eye on Layla. He had no idea what she’d been up to.
Shane was also curious. He knew Layla’s basket had something in it, but he hadn’t asked before Liam showed up.
Layla lifted the basket lid. “A nest of rabbits.”
Shane and Liam both leaned in to look. Their heads nearly touched as they peered inside, where a few rabbits were huddled together.
“You’re barely keeping yourself alive, and now you’re keeping pets?”
“That’s you,” Layla shot back with a snort.
Liam shrugged. “Fine.”
A bird keeping a rabbit… that’s kinda cute.
“Wait, aren’t you a deer?” Layla asked, looking pointedly at the buck on the ground. “A deer, going hunting, and bringing me back a deer… does that even make sense?”
Liam stared at her. “Are you actually uneducated? You don’t know the difference between a beastkin and a regular animal?”
[That’s personal preference. Like me, I’d never eat a rat.]
[I don’t think rodent beastkin need to chime in on this topic.]
[Agreed.]
[Same.]
[Seconded.]
Layla really hadn’t read any Beast World textbooks. She couldn’t see the difference between a beastkin and an animal.
From her own experience, when she shifted, she felt no different from an animal. And she would definitely never eat a pink spoonbill.

Chapter 40 Eat Bones?
But if she was truly starving, anything was possible. Back in the apocalypse, people had resorted to eating each other.
R,
Layla shrugged and didn’t press the point. She pointed to the bamboo again. “Can you handle that?”
“I can,” Liam said, and without another word, he started splitting the bamboo.
Layla turned and began processing the deer he’d brought. She skinned it, removed the bones, and then asked Liam, “You want the bones?”
“No,” Liam said without looking up.
Shane, who was still drawing at the table, heard this and immediately handed Layla a clay pot. “If he doesn’t want them, we do.”
Liam turned his head at that. “What can you do with bones?”
Neither of them answered him.
He was brushed off, but it didn’t seem to faze him. He just shrugged and went back to preparing the bamboo.
Once the bamboo was all split into strips, he straightened up and asked Layla, “How big do you want it?”
This time, Layla couldn’t ignore him. She pictured full-grown rabbits. “As big as you can make it. But it mostly depends on your skill.”
Liam let out a low chuckle. “You know, I’ve realized you’re really good at goading people.”
“Oops, you caught me,” Layla said sarcastically as she worked on the venison. “This deer is too lean. There’s hardly any
fat.”
“It’s a wild deer from the mountains, not a farm-raised one. How fat do you expect it to be?”
“With no fat, frying is out. I’ll smoke it for you instead,” Layla decided.
To save time, she sliced the meat thinly, lit some cypress branches, and skewered the venison on bamboo sticks to smoke over the fire. “When you eat it, just steam it.”
Liam watched her process closely.
At first, he thought he could copy it. But after watching for a while, he decided it looked like too much trouble.
He had a firm belief: leave specialized tasks to specialists.

Chapter 40 Eat Bones?
For him, hunting was much easier than cooking.
[Layla really doesn’t want to give Liam any of her cooking oil. She has a whole jar of fat!]
[Exactly! Anyone who says Layla is into Liam or chasing him is blind. Since when is this how you chase someone?]
[You don’t get it. Those people have their own logic. They’d say she’s playing hard to get.]
[Oh, fuck that! I think Layla and Prof. Slater are way more compatible. They have great chemistry! Did you see how smoothly Prof. Slater handed her the pot earlier? And how they both ignored Liam?]

[And there’s more! I also saw that when Layla ignored Liam, Prof. Slater’s smile widened by just two whole pixels. He was thrilled!]
