Chapter 39 I Had You Wrong Before

Shane had once chased a bitmon and knocked himself out. He shouldn’t have returned with so little even after a full day out, worn out as he was. That was because he had not been searching for food at all.

Looking at the X marks on his map, it was obvious he’d already checked those areas.

“What are you looking for? Need my help?” Layla asked.

They were a team, and Shane was way more likeable than the other guys. For someone she didn’t mind, Layla was fine with being helpful.

“Starcore Ore. You can’t really help yet,” Shane admitted. “I don’t even know what kind of place it’s found in. I need to narrow down the search area first, otherwise we’re just wandering in the dark.

“Starcore Ore? A kind of metal?” Layla’s eyes lit up. Any metal Shane was specifically hunting for had to be good.

If Planet A13 really had this stuff, it wouldn’t be a useless rock anymore-it’d be a goldmine. Once the planet was hers, she’d be rich!

“It’s a metal that can boost a mech’s combat stats,” Shane explained. “They found a few tiny pieces before, but it wasn’t enough to prove there’s a real deposit here.”

“How much does it boost them?” Layla pressed.

This was about the planet’s value, so she needed specifics.

“It’s not certain. The earlier samples were too small to cover a whole mech,” Shane said. “But it definitely helps. Any improvement matters in mech design. Even a small boost is worth looking

into.”

Layla thought it over. One thing was clear: if Planet A13 had Starcore Ore, this worthless rock’s price would shoot through the roof.

Whether she sold it or kept it, she’d win big.

Layla clapped her hands. “I’ll help you look!”

A soft light shone in Shane’s eyes, but he warned her, “It won’t be easy. Planet A13 is huge.”

A barren planet that cost 46 billion star coins was huge.

With just the two of them, finding the ore wouldn’t just be hard-it’d be almost impossible. Whole areas were unreachable even with advanced technology. The task was huge.

Her easy-going attitude made Shane’s eyes shine even brighter. “A lot of people have you all wrong.”

Coming from Shane, that meant more than a hundred compliments from anyone else.

“Who’s getting her wrong?” Liam’s voice came from the doorway as he walked in, a deer over his shoulder.

Seeing Liam, Layla broke into a big smile. “You’re just in time. I was about to come find you.”

Liam was here to deliver meat-food that decided if she’d survive the year and if the planet would be hers. It was tied to her dream of getting rich.

With that in mind, Layla looked at Liam like he was a pile of gleaming star coins. It was hard to keep a straight face.

The light in Shane’s eyes instantly turned a deep, reptilian green. He couldn’t help wondering why Layla wanted Liam. Was she still hung up on him?

After a second of surprise, a lazy grin spread across Liam’s face. “Looking for me that bad? Got a job for me?”
