Chapter 401 Our Top Priority Right Now

Anger still burned in Oliver’s eyes as he finished speaking.

He must have had some personal connection to the so-called traitor. People did not waste strong feelings over someone they did not know.

Layla cut straight to the point. “What is your relationship with him?”

Oliver froze for a moment, then forced a bitter smile. “You can see right through everything, Layla. He raised me when I was little. You already know my standing within the royal family was never high. I probably would not have survived my childhood without him.”

A heavy sadness crept into Oliver’s tone as he spoke.

Tears glistened in his eyes. Layla reached out and gently stroked the top of his head, her voice unusually soft. “People change over time. Still, he truly cared for you when he looked after you. There is no reason to doubt the good times you once shared.”

Those words hit Oliver hard.

He stared at Layla, about to say something.

Before he could get a word out, George broke into their conversation. “He is just one single man. How can your whole royal family fail to track him down? That is pretty pathetic.”

Oliver glared at George, furious. “How dare you talk like that! Do you really think I cannot tell my father to have your head cut off?”

George rolled his eyes hard. “You think you are still living under the old royal rule? Cut my head off? Keep dreaming.”

A sharp yell burst out of Oliver. He lunged forward, ready to chase George down and fight him.

George had seen this coming. He knew his sharp tongue would get him in trouble, so he spun on his heels and sprinted away.

Layla and Carson exchanged glances. Both of them looked utterly exasperated.

Vanguard’s live feed kept cutting in and out. Viewers watching the stream could not pick up the full conversation.

They only guessed Oliver had poured out his heart to Layla until George’s rude interruption sent both men running off, play-fighting.

Comments flooded the live chat.

[I told you Oliver and George are total rivals who can’t stay apart. They are so fun together.]

[Yeah. Things would never get boring for Layla with those two around.]

[I love watching them bicker and compete over Layla.]

[Same here; it’s hilarious. Hey, has anyone else noticed how fuzzy the video is getting?]

“You are right. Is fog rolling in all around us? It looks purple.” Layla glanced over at Vanguard’s screen. Her eyes went wide with alarm.

She had nearly forgotten what that purple marker stood for-miasma and swamp terrain.

Oliver and George had run off at full speed. If they lost contact out there, finding them again would become nearly impossible.

She cupped her hands around her mouth and shouted toward the direction the two men had vanished, “Oliver! George! Get back here! Do not wander off! There is swamp land ahead!”

Her voice echoed through the surroundings, but no one answered her call.

A bad premonition washed over Layla.

“Could they have already run straight into the miasma?” Worry rang clear in her voice.

Carson stared at the thickening purple haze ahead and nodded gravely. “It looks that way.”

Nearly all their supplies rested on Carson’s back.

George carried only a small first-aid kit. He had no water and no food at all.

They immediately took off running toward the spot where Oliver and George had disappeared.

Every second they wasted widened the gap between them. The longer they waited, the harder it would be to locate the pair.

Layla called out their names non-stop while she ran. A strip of cloth tied her wrist to Carson’s, meant to stop them from getting separated.

Even after half an hour of rushing forward, Layla and Carson found no trace of the two young

men.

Vanguard struggled to keep up right behind them.

Signal quality kept dropping. The live stream only displayed broken, fragmented footage.
