“Would you normally act this rash and impatient?” he asked.

Carson’s words pricked through Layla’s frenzied state-they snapped her right back to her
senses.
She realized the truth. Even if Oliver and George were lost inside the miasma-choked woods, she had no reason to race around blindly, swept up in panic.
This was never how she operated.
Even if panic had gotten the better of her for a moment, she would not have behaved the way she had when Carson first tried to warn her.
Layla furrowed her brows.
She fought hard to push back the restlessness boiling inside her. “Is the miasma messing with our emotions?”
Carson nodded. He pulled face masks out of his pack and handed one over to Layla.
He said, “Breathe in as little of it as you can. We have to find them fast, or we could end irreversible consequences.”

Layla nodded in agreement. She took the mask from Carson, fitted it securely over her face, and headed deeper into the distance.
They moved forward and carved marks into the tree trunks along their path.
The markers kept them from getting hopelessly lost in the forest, so they could trace their way back out later.
They also served as a signal for George and Oliver. If they stumbled down this same trail, they could follow the carvings to catch up with Layla.
Some distance away, George and Oliver only just figured out that they had wandered into the miasma forest and that Layla and Carson were nowhere in sight.
George grabbed Oliver hard before the boy could bolt off again. He growled, “Stop running. I think we’re lost.”
Oliver froze and spun around. The two stared at one another, scanning their surroundings. Sure enough, they could not tell which path they had taken to get here.
Oliver swallowed hard. Wide, endless black spaces terrified him, and he stepped closer to

George noticed Oliver drawing near. He shot the younger boy a look and let out a mocking huff. “What’s this? Prince Oliver scared of a little woods?”
For once, Oliver did not fire back with a retort. His face had gone pale, and genuine fear showed plainly across his features.
George’s brows drew together. His tone lost its usual teasing bite. “Wait, you’re actually afraid of this place?”
A horrible memory flashed in Oliver’s mind, and his voice shook. “Back when I was little, one of my caretakers hated the trouble I caused. Since the royal family barely paid me any mind, he would lock me alone inside a room to sleep. When I could not fall asleep, he would turn off all the lights. That’s when I developed this fear of huge, pitch-black spaces.”
Rage flared inside George as he listened to the story.
Who could treat a prince that cruelly?
He shifted awkwardly and set one hand on Oliver’s shoulder. “Alright. Since you look that miserable, I’ll stick with you. We’ll move carefully and find Layla as soon as we can.”
Oliver’s body trembled. He gave a short nod and took a deep breath.
Once he had calmed himself down, Oliver flexed his fingers.
He was a light-element beastkin from the royal family. Within safe limits, he could gather his power and form glowing orbs of light.
The bright spheres lit up the path ahead as much as possible.
The two picked their way forward slowly, calling Layla’s name over and over.
The miasma did more than throw off their sense of direction.
Heavy exposure to the toxic fog dulled hearing, sight, and touch.
No matter how loud George and Oliver shouted, Layla-who was not terribly far away-never caught a single one of their calls.
All at once, Layla spotted a figure darting quickly through the trees up ahead. The silhouette looked just like George.
“George!” she cried out, and she sprinted after it.
Carson moved fast and seized her arm to hold her back.

His voice stayed steady and composed. “George and Oliver are sticking together. They would never split up once they realized they’d lost us.”
That meant the shadow they had seen could not have belonged to either boy.
Layla and Carson locked eyes.
The same thought crossed both of their minds at exactly the same time-someone else was out here in this forest.
Layla held her breath and gritted her teeth. She stood back-to-back with Carson, ready for anyone to leap out and attack them.
They walked on for a long stretch, yet no ambush ever came.
Instead, Layla caught a strange, rich scent drifting through the air.
It reminded her of cassava roasting over hot coals, mixed with warm nutty notes.
She sniffed the air gently, then turned toward Carson. “Wolf Boss, do you smell that? It’s like roasted nuts cooked over charcoal.”
