Layla let out a deep sigh. Looks like we have no choice but to head side.”

Carson thought it over and made a suggestion. “I could go in first to scout it out. You can follow after me if nothing seems too dangerous.”

Layla shook her head right away and shot down his plan. “We have no idea what waits inside. Sticking together lets us watch each other’s backs. If you go in alone, those ghost-hand vines could yank you away before you get a single warning signal out. What would I do then?”

Carson fell silent after hearing Layla’s words.

He hesitated for quite a while before he finally nodded. “Alright. Spay to my right-rear. This hand gesture will be our danger signal. The second you see it, run without hesitation-do not stop for me under any circumstances.”

Layla lifted her eyes and met Carson’s earnest gaze. A quiet jolt ran through her chest.

In the end, Layla nodded.

She came from an apocalyptic world. Romantic feelings would never cloud her drive to survive.

If the worst-case scenario Carson described actually happened, at least one of them had to make it out alive.

That would leave the other person a chance to call for help.

It was far better than having both of them die down here.

With that thought in mind, Layla fell into position right behind Carson’s right side, exactly as he had told

her.

Carson picked up a dry tree branch. He tore off a strip of their spare cloth and soaked it in oil.

He struck a flame and started walking into the cave with the torch in hand.

They had traveled less than 15 feet inside the cave when Layla picked up an extremely strange surge of

energy.

This energy felt unlike anything she had ever sensed before.

It rippled over her skin like a mild electric current, sending soft tingles across her whole body and filling her with a strange sense of calm.

“This energy surge-is this the energy field Oliver and the others talked about?” Layla glanced toward Carson, uncertainty clear in her tone.

Carson gave a short nod. “It should be.”

He had traveled to countless places and experienced many different kinds of energy signatures.

None of them matched the feeling wrapping around them right now.

Suddenly, he opened his eyes and stepped forward. “It’s coming from over there.”

Layla followed Carson’s pointing finger toward the deeper sections of the cave.

They exchanged a quick look and agreed to press onward.

Carson stayed close to Layla the whole time, keeping watch for anyone who might jump out and hurt her.

The farther they went, the more Layla could sense an inexplicable stench.

All at once, she caught the sound of footsteps. She spun sharply toward the shadowed corner where the noise had come from and called out sharply, “Who’s there?”

Carson turned his head, following Layla’s line of sight.

Hiding deep within a dark nook not far away stood a human figure.

Carson sprinted forward without hesitation. He grabbed the man by the neck and threw him hard onto he ground.

Layla held the torch up toward the man’s face for a clear look.

A ragged-looking man huddled on the ground. He covered his head with both hands, fully expecting Carson and Layla to beat him.

ayla frowned slightly. She stared down at him quietly and spoke. “Who are you?”

The man stared back at Layla in total shock. “You aren’t going to kill me?” he asked tentatively.

Layla gestured toward her own face, a dry laugh escaping her out of sheer exasperation. “Do I really look ike some violent maniac?”

The man waved his hands frantically, and a flicker of guilt crossed his eyes.

Layla closed her eyes calmly and stepped back behind Carson.

Carson took over the questioning. “So, who are you? What are you doing in this cave?”

The man hesitated. Guilt showed on his face, and he struggled to decide whether he should tell the truth.

Carson let out a cold huff at his reaction. “If you won’t talk honestly, I can force you to.”

Intimidated by Carson’s heavy aura, the man trembled. He swallowed hard and spoke nervously. “I used to work for the royal family. Something went wrong later, and I got sent down here.”
