Chapter 403 Sit Still With Your Bad Leg
As a wolf beastkin, Garson should have possessed an extremely sharp sense of smell.
Right after Layla finished speaking, he sniffed the air all around him. He picked up none of the rich fragrance Layla had described.
He gave a small shake of his head. “I don’t smell anything.”
Layla’s eyes filled with quiet doubt.
Could the miasma I have inhaled trigger some kind of hallucination?

Carson reached out and patted the top of her head. “Don’t worry. We just need to locate George and Oliver quickly. Shane gave us medicine to counter the miasma, remember? Once we find them and take it, everything should be fine.”
Carson’s words eased Layla’s anxiety a little.
She nodded softly, and the two kept circling through the woods searching for George and Oliver.
Meanwhile, George and Oliver had traveled off in the exact opposite direction from Layla and Carson.
Bad luck worked against them. They never spotted a single trail marker Layla and Carson had carved into the trees.
All of a sudden, Oliver heard a sharp cry of pain ring out from right behind him, where George stood.
He spun around in alarm, fully expecting to see George under attack by wild beasts or venomous snakes
and insects.
Instead, George had stepped straight into a hidden pit. His body lurched violently forward, and he crashed to the ground.
One of his legs had sunk deep into marshy muck, and it looked badly twisted.
Oliver hurried over to his side. “Are you okay?”
Tears welled up in George’s eyes. He gritted his teeth and nodded. “Do I look okay to you?”
Irritation flickered across Oliver’s face, and he tapped George hard on the head. “Can you just talk normally right now?”
George felt stung by Oliver’s sharp tap.
He pouted, “Fine, I get it.”
Even though he still grumbled under his breath, George let Oliver examine his injury without putting up any fight.
Oliver finished checking the wound and let out a quiet breath of relief. It was nothing more than a simple sprain.

He stood up and brushed dirt off his palms. “Stay right here. I’tn going to find some sturdy tree branches.”
George eyed Oliver with obvious suspicion. “Wait a second-you arent planning to stake me to a tree, are you?”
Oliver’s mouth twitched. “I wish I could.”
He turned away and located a solid, well-sized branch. Next, he tore a strip off the hem of his own shirt and wrapped it tightly around George’s injured leg to hold it steady.
George touched the tip of his nose, feeling embarrassed.
He had jumped to far too many terrible conclusions about Oliver.
With one leg useless, he had no choice but to rely entirely on Oliver for help.
Oliver did not waste extra words. He hoisted George onto his back and slowly wandered deeper through the forest.
After a while, he heaved a long sigh. “We should just wait right here. We’ve got no food or water on us, and we’ll get hungry and thirsty before long.”
George’s expression shifted. “That’s right. All our medical supplies are with me. What if Layla and Carson get hit by the miasma?”
Worry also crept over Oliver once he heard George’s point.
George hesitated, pulled his pack off his shoulders, and held it out toward Oliver. “Why don’t you go find Layla and the rest of them? I’ll stay here and wait.”
Oliver rejected the idea immediately. “You can’t stay out here alone. If wild animals show up, how are you supposed to run with a sprained leg?”
Things would have been easier if a river sat nearby. George could shift into his beast form and swim away o safety.
No such water source existed anywhere close by.
George sighed. For the first time, genuine regret settled over him for his own carelessness.
Oliver surprised him by patting his head gently. “Hey, you didn’t mean to hurt yourself. Hand that backpack over, and I’ll look for something for sprains and bruises.”
George tossed the pack over to him.
Oliver actually found a small bottle of powerful spray made for treating blunt-force injuries.
He said, “Prof. Slater must have packed this bag. He really thinks of everything.”
