Chapter 410 Protect Me?

George and Oliver locked eyes with each other, and both of them let out loud screams at the same time.

Layla, who was following Arnold to track down Oliver and George, caught the faint sound.

She snapped her head toward Carson beside her. “Did you hear screaming?”

Carson hesitated and shook his head.

He had kept his full attention on Arnold, watching for any sudden moves, and he had heard nothing.

Layla wrote it off as her own overactive senses. She scratched her head and kept walking behind Arnold.

They had not gone far when two figures came sprinting straight toward them at top speed.

Layla’s face lit up with relief the moment she recognized George and Oliver. She opened her mouth to greet them, but Carson pulled her sharply backward.

“Something is right on their heels,” Carson said, his voice tight with alarm.

Arnold’s eyes blew wide. His lips trembled. “How did they run into a Man-Faced Stag?”

Layla glanced over at him. “What is a Man-Faced Stag?”

Arnold lifted a shaking hand and pointed ahead.

Layla turned slowly. A tall, grotesque creature was bearing down on them at terrifying speed.

Her eyes went wide, and a curse flashed through her mind.

This monster was far more revolting than any mutated beast she had seen back in the apocalypse.

Nothing like this should have existed.

George and Oliver spotted Layla’s group and waved frantically. “Run! Get out of here!”

Arnold had already spun around and bolted.

Carson hoisted Layla up onto his shoulder and took off running.

His hard shoulder dug repeatedly into her stomach with every stride.

Layla’s stomach churned violently. She tried several times to speak, yet no words came out.

They reached a bend with a cave opening. Carson, George, and Oliver darted inside, and only then could Layla catch her breath.

Carson had noticed Layla trying to talk back during their flight.

Now that they were somewhat safe, he leaned down toward her. “What were you trying to say back there?”

Layla fought back her nausea, her head spinning as she looked up at him. “I was going to say I could shift into my beast form and fly all of us away.”

Carson fell silent.

He was about to reply when twisted, uncanny faces started shoving their way through the cave entrance

Layla and the others stepped quickly backward.

“What the hell is this thing?” Layla asked, holding back her revulsion

The face looked like that of a woman, long dead, gray-pale and bloated from soaking in water.

It strained to squeeze its body through the narrow cave opening, writhing like a maggot.

Layla drew the Broad War Saber Emily had given her when Arnold’s voice cut through the tension. “Don’t kill it. You cannot destroy it. Attacking it will only enrage it. Stay right here. It does not have much patience.”

Layla turned and saw Arnold, who had run ahead of them, had also taken shelter inside this cave.

She walked over toward him. “You called it a Man-Faced Stag. Is it unique to this miasma forest?”

Arnold nodded, lost in old memories. “The first time I crossed paths with it, I thought it was just another creature twisted by the miasma. But when I struck it, it dissolved into a thick fog and wrapped itself all around me. I would have died right then if the energy field I carried hadn’t driven it off.”

At the mention of “energy field”, Oliver’s head shot up, and his gaze locked onto Arnold.

His lips quivered, and he blurted out in shock, “What are you doing here?”

Complex emotions flooded Arnold’s face the instant he laid eyes on Oliver, and he hung his head.

Oliver lunged forward, furious, ready to throw a punch, but Layla stepped in to block him.

She held his gaze steady. “There may be a misunderstanding about what happened back then.”
