Chapter 42 Can’t Let a Handsome Guy Be Uncomfortable
[Talk about Layla all you want, but why did you have to take a shot at me!]
[Prof. Slater, I was supporting you, but if you’re gonna talk like that, I don’t know what to do. But if you could go easy on my final grade, I might be able to get back on your and Layla’s ship.]
[So even Crownpeak University students are scared of failing a class.]
[These four years in the Mech Design program have been the hardest five years of my life, and it looks like there might be a sixth.]
[My heart aches for a second, but that’s honestly hilarious!]
“I really don’t mean to kick you out,” Layla said. “I’m just asking. When I built this treehouse, I didn’t think anyone else would be here. I only made a sleeping area for myself. If you’re planning to stay, I’ll build an extra room at the back later. That way, you won’t have to sleep on the floor.”
Even though the treehouse floor and the bed weren’t that different, Layla, having once been purely human, preferred a bed. She believed people should sleep in beds.
The floor was damp and uncomfortable!
Hearing this, Shane’s vertical pupils slowly returned to normal. “I’m fine sleeping here.”
Layla stared at him, speechless.
You might be fine, but have you considered me? What about my convenience?
“No, that won’t do. I can’t let a handsome guy be uncomfortable,” Layla blurted out, immediately wishing she could bite her own tongue.
Shit! I just get a little familiar with someone and my mouth starts running. This mouth of mine really gets me in trouble!
Shane pretended not to notice her annoyance-he was actually quite pleased at being flirted
with.
“Then I’ll leave it to you.”
Seeing that Shane didn’t seem to catch her teasing, Layla sighed in relief, “Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered.”
After talking, both of them, tired from a long day, soon fell silent and went to sleep.
The next morning, when Layla woke up, the person on the floor was already gone. The wolf

Finished
Jumping down from the treehouse, she saw Shane sitting by the stove. A clay pot bubbled with bone broth, containing a little meat and some cleaned wild greens beside it.
“Awake? Go wash up. Breakfast is almost ready.”
When Layla returned from washing her face, Shane had just taken the clay pot off the fire. He tossed the wild greens into the still-bubbling broth. He served Layla a bowl first, adding plenty of meat.
Layla said, “Today, I’ll build the treehouse extension. You go do your own thing. Take the basket when you’re looking for stuff, and don’t forget to pick some wild greens along the way. We can dry them for winter.”
Shane nodded. After finishing three large bowls of broth, he got up, picked up the basket, and left.
After eating, Layla got to work. Considering Shane’s beast form was fairly large, she planned to make his part of the treehouse bigger than her own.
She had just started when George arrived with two clay jars of seawater, calling from the yard entrance, “Layla, I brought your water!”
The yard gate opened. Layla glared at George, annoyed. “Can’t you just push the door open
come in?”
and
“What are you talking about? If the door was open, I’d waltz right in. But it’s closed. I can’t just barge in!”
A closed door won’t stop someone who’s set on getting in.
Layla understood that. In the apocalypse, many doors were steel gates, some even electrified.
They kept out zombies, but also people with bad intentions.
In such harsh times, humans could be far more dangerous than zombies.
If there was food and water inside, a closed wooden door-even a steel one-wouldn’t stop someone desperate to get in.
Layla couldn’t remember the last time she’d heard someone say they shouldn’t enter a closed door. For a moment, she looked at George differently.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” George shot her a glare and set the clay jars on the ground.
Layla snapped out of it and shook her head. “It’s nothing.”
