Chapter 43 George Has Ulterior Motives?

[But is Layla wrong? Haven’t we seen enough scandals in the entertainment industry? Before they get exposed, all those celebrities have tons of fans. They act all proper in front of the cameras, but behind the scenes, they’re capable of doing the most messed-up things.]

[But this is George we’re talking about! Before, when Layla was chasing him, George wouldn’t even look at her. And now she gets to look down on him?]

[Use your brain! The stuff before was all rumors. No one ever actually saw Layla chasing George. But everyone with eyes can see Layla looking at George like he’s something stuck on her shoe.]

Layla admitted she’d overestimated George. The guy was proud, good-looking, and had a sharp tongue, but he wasn’t the brightest.

It was different from Shane. Shane’s “cluelessness” came from being completely focused on mech design. His priorities were on a different level; he didn’t sweat the small stuff in daily life. His head was full of schematics and equations.

But Shane was smart. He learned fast. Take basic life skills-he’d watch Layla do something once and could usually copy it.

George was different. He’d gotten by entirely on his looks, his blunt personality, and the unique singing voice of a merman.

Among all the poised, polished celebrities in the industry, his naive, unpretentious personality made him a breath of fresh air and won him plenty of fans.

She’d thought too highly of him before, imagining he might try something with her.

Honestly, with his brain, that level of scheming was beyond him. The worst he’d do was talk trash behind someone’s back, maybe throw some sarcastic shade, like he used to.

“I was asking if you needed help,” George snapped, shooting Layla a glare. “Some thanks I get! Fine, be that way!”

Layla couldn’t help but laugh, “For free?”

“Of course not!” George’s eyes widened.

“If it’s not free, that’s not helping. That’s a job,” Layla said. She pointed to the two jars of seawater and set up the distiller for him. “Just keep this filled. Swap the collection pot when it’s full. The empty ones are in the stone shelter.”

George gave a haughty little sniff.

But he got to work and was pretty focused.

He sat in the spot Shane usually used.

Layla watched him for a bit, made sure he wasn’t messing up, then flew back into the tree to keep working on Shane’s room extension.

Around lunchtime, the two jars of water were all distilled. George stood up and yelled toward the tree, “Hey! What about lunch?”

Layla paused her work.

What exactly is Stella’s criteria for picking her mates? Their appetites?

“Don’t you have jerky?”

“The jerky was for the water. Lunch is for my labor. Make me something, come on!” he urged. When Layla didn’t come down immediately, he put his hands on his hips. “You should be honored I’m letting you cook for me. Now get down here!”

He’d smelled it yesterday—Layla’s grilled fish was amazing. And that jerky was way better than any nutrient solution he’d ever had.

He couldn’t believe the bland stuff he’d been surviving on before.

Layla set down the plank she was holding and flew down to make lunch.

She wasn’t touching the two eggs-Shane liked those.

And she was reluctant to give George more jerky.

In the end, she took down a wild hen hanging by the stone shelter entrance, grabbed a handful of dried mushrooms, and made a simple stew.

“We’re having this?” George’s eyes lit up. He’d actually never had chicken before and was

curious.

He asked, “If I go get two more jars of water this afternoon, can I have another bag of jerky?”

The taste of that jerky was seriously unforgettable. One bag was enough to fill him up, but he craved it, especially at night when he wanted something to chew on.

Come winter, they could melt snow for fresh water, so that wouldn’t be a problem.

But snow was still a while off. Since George was offering, she had no reason to say no.

[Am I the only one who thinks George has ulterior motives?]

[You think everyone has ulterior motives! You’re so obsessed with romance you probably think
