Chapter 429 I’m Stealing Her Spotlight
Sla glanced over at Julian.
Leonard had left some time ago, and Julian had stuck by her side ever since.
He deserved credit for all the work he had put in, even if he had earned no major victories.
She gave him a generous nod.

Stella watched the birthday-party dishes get prepared at a frantic pace, and a satisfied smile tugged at her lips.
Emily showed up out of nowhere right then.
The instant Stella’s eyes landed on Emily, a vicious glint flashed across her face.
She shifted her demeanor right away, acting as if she had run into an old long-lost friend. She hurried over. genuine-looking excitement in her eyes. “Oh, Emily, you made it.”
Emily stepped back subtly and met Stella’s gaze, her tone flat and unemotional. “I came to bring you a gift.”
With those words, she tossed a massive snakehead fish onto the ground.
Its gills flapped steadily; it had clearly just been pulled out of the water.
A fish this big could feed Stella and Julian for close to half a month.
Real, unfeigned joy showed on Stella’s face the moment she saw the fish!
Scarlett had already made it clear she would dispose of every leftover scrap once the birthday party wrapped up.
Stella would not get to keep any surplus food.
Gratitude flickered in Julian’s eyes, too.
With this fish, he would not need to go hunting for at least two days.
Emily kept her tone cool as she addressed Stella. “This fish tastes really good. You’ve got chefs here-have them roast it for everyone tomorrow. I’ll bring you another one the day after tomorrow.”
Stella nodded after hearing Emily’s suggestion.
She told Julian to store the fish away, then moved close and linked her arm through Emily’s.
Emily tried to pull her arm free, but she remembered what Layla had told her.
She let out a quiet sigh. “After all, you’re my childhood friend.”
Bright excitement lit up Stella’s eyes upon hearing those words.
She nodded happily. “I still don’t know why you pulled away from me all of a sudden, but I’m glad we’ve

cleared up the misunderstanding. We’re still good friends.”
ily ignored Stella’s comment and stared at her with a heavy, unreadable expression.

Noon rolled around the next day. Brilliant sunlight poured over the open ground in front of Stella’s hut.
Stella had already had the whole area cleaned up.
Fancy crystal tables shipped in sat spread across the space.
The Grant family had sent over all kinds of pastries, a full selection of drinks, and fresh meat.
Many contestants stared at the spread, overtly envious.
Stella wore a flowing white gauze dress. Silhouettes of swan beastkin wings ran along the fabric of her skirt.
A sweet smile rested on her face. She held a wine glass and greeted every guest as they arrived.
She truly looked every bit the wealthy Grant family heiress.
Julian trailed behind her. His gaze wandered nervously, and he kept glancing toward the entrance to check whether Layla had arrived.
Tension hung all over his features.
Every so often, his eyes drifted toward the snakehead fish sizzling over the campfire, and he swallowed hard.
He was not hungry-he was terrified.
Julian knew something had been done to that fish. But how could he make absolutely sure Stella would eat the tainted piece?
Just as that thought crossed his mind, Layla and her group walked in.
Carson carried a huge wooden tub filled with sauces and pre-cut meat:
Four other males walked close beside Layla.
Yates brought up the rear, holding a clay pot that held fish soup Layla had simmered for hours.
Layla stepped up to Stella and offered her a smile. “Happy birthday. I don’t have anything fancy to give you, so I brought some things I made myself.”
Stella offered a pleased smile as she looked oyer Layla’s homemade offerings. “Thank you. That’s so thoughtful of you.”
Coldness slowly surfaced in Layla’s eyes as she watched Stella’s act.
Emily walked over to Layla and greeted her warmly. “Here comes our great cook.”
The other guests crowded around after hearing Emily’s remark.
“Layla, we’ve all heard how amazing your cooking is. Why don’t you show off your skills for your sister’s birthday?”
