Chapter 44 Showing Off

[But isn’t that how females are supposed to be? Females just need to be pretty, take care of the home, and raise kids.]
[But don’t you think maybe Layla is how a normal female should be?]
The live chat paused briefly at that comment, but quickly got rowdy again. Stella’s arrival brought a lot of nasty comments.
[My Stella came all this way to check on the toxic trash. Don’t you have any hearts?!]
[Yeah! My Stella even brought something for the toxic trash!]
[I swear, you Stellights need to stop. “Toxic trash” this, “toxic trash” that. Layla earns her own keep. What’s wrong with that? You want to be a parasite, fine, but not everyone does!]
[She “earns her own keep” because no one wants her!]
[Open your eyes! George and Liam have been coming around Layla’s place the past few days, and Prof. Slater is right there in the yard. How can you say no one wants her?]
Stella pushed the yard gate open and walked in just as Layla and George were eating together at the table.
Hearing the gate, Layla’s head snapped up. Her eyes went sharp, fixed on the entrance. The fork in her hand shifted direction, ready to be thrown at a moment’s notice.
Stella strode in without hesitation. When she saw George, her eyes dimmed perfectly. “George, you’re here with Layla.”
George had expected Stella might cause trouble for Layla, but he hadn’t thought she’d lose her cool this fast.
“You’re the one who said you were giving me back to Layla, that I should come find her. Did you forget?” George’s voice was dripping with sarcasm.
Stella froze for a second, then managed a fragile smile. “I didn’t mean to force you. I just thought Layla was your rightful fiancée. I’ve already taken so much from her, so I can’t take her
mates, too.”
Layla was getting annoyed just listening. She picked up a wooden spoon and scooped several mushrooms onto George’s plate, piling them high.
Stella was startled by Layla serving George. Her eyes locked on him.
George had never let her put food on his plate.

Once, when they were eating together, thinking of their relationship, she’d given him a piece of fish. But George never touched that piece, not for the whole meal.
George didn’t notice her surprise or her displeasure at all. He ignored her and buried his head in his food.
Mmm-this is good!
Stella’s face darkened even more, and Layla wasn’t about to let up.
Seeing that George hadn’t noticed she’d only given him mushrooms and not a single piece of chicken, Layla finally looked up at Stella, her impatience plainly visible.
“What are you doing here? Don’t you know you should knock before entering? Is that the manners the Grants taught you?”
Stella took a deep breath, pushing down her irritation. When she lifted her head, she faced the Vanguard, her eyes perfectly red-rimmed.
[Ahhh! Layla! You made my girl cry! You’re the worst!]
[She only has to frown to break my heart, and you made her cry! Layla, I won’t forgive you!]
“I came to return this to you.”
Stella placed a bag on the table.
Layla recognized it. It was the bag she’d used for Liam’s jerky yesterday.
“What’s this about?” Layla asked.
“General Hartwell gave this to me last night. I didn’t know it was from you.”
Layla nodded. The meaning was clear: Liam had gotten the food and given it to Stella first thing.
Showing off.
“If I’d known sooner, I would have made Liam bring it back to you right away.”
Layla nodded again.
Still showing off. Flaunting that Liam listened to her, praising her own reasonableness.
“So, you’re giving this jerky back to me now?” Layla raised an eyebrow, a smile playing on her lips.
“It was always yours. General Hartwell is your fiancé. His catch should go to you. How could he
