Layla was not surprised by this at all. She kept pressing for answers. “Who is this mystery person? Why is he after the energy field?”

The assassin said, “I already told you, I don’t know his real identity. He only got in touch with Ms. Ciara Grant not long ago. We have no clue why he wants the energy field either.”

The group exchanged glances. Worry showed plainly on every one of their faces.

There were only two real motives for chasing the energy field-profit, or power.

Going after profit made little sense for this unknown figure if he was working with the Grant Group.

The Grant Group was infamous for chasing every last bit of money. Even tiny gains were something they would fight over. It would be tough to turn a profit while partnering with them.

If power was what this man wanted, though, the stakes became far more dangerous. He might even spark an interstellar war.

Disaster would follow if he ever got his hands on the energy field.

Liam stepped forward, his tone sharp and cold. “What other plans does Ciara have? Will she send more assassins to kill us?”

The assassin nodded. “Three days from now, she plans to sneak onto Planet A13. She’s coming to hunt for he energy field herself.”

Layla’s gaze hardened.

Ciara intended to show up in three days. That told Layla how desperate Ciara truly was.

A mocking smile tugged at Layla’s lips. “Alright. Thanks for telling us all this.”

Her voice stayed level. “We will contact interstellar police and give them the full story. What happens to you will be left up to their judgment.”

Despair washed over the assassin. He knew this was the end for him..

Ciara had her own troubles to deal with right now. She would never lift a finger to save them.

Layla and the others walked out of the basement and pulled the heavy door shut behind them.

She turned toward the rest of the group and lowered her voice. “Things have gotten serious. Ciara is coming to Planet A13 in three days. That mystery backer could very well come along with her.”

This unknown party had supplied the assassins with so much advanced gear. He had to hold enormous power of his own.

A brutal fight-far worse than anything they had faced yet-waited for them in three days’ time.

They needed to get ready ahead of schedule. They had to set up strong defenses around the energy field right away. They could not let Ciara succeed.

Shane gave a nod. “We know the energy field connects to Starcore Essence. Tracking down Starcore Essence ore might give us real leads

‘Arnold also mentioned the energy field is probably inside, that cave where we first met Zeke. We can check that cave out first.”

Everyone agreed. They would set out early the next morning and stop to check on Arnold’s condition along the way.

Layla looked over at Emily, who had not said a single word this whole time. She kept her voice soft. “We will fill you in on every detail once we get back. Could you stay behind and guard our cabin for us?”

Emily met Layla’s sincere eyes and nodded gently.

She pulled Layla into a short hug. “Go on. You can count on me.”

nside her office, Ciara had heard nothing back from the fiye assassins she had dispatched. Nervousness :rept over her.

Has the mission failed? Have Layla’s group uncovered what I have done?

Right then, her comms device buzzed.

she felt even more alarmed when she saw the familiar caller ID pop up.

Her hands shook as she tapped to accept the call. A deep, scolding voice boomed from the speaker right way. “What mess have you gotten yourself into behind my back?”

Ciara’s knees buckled. She nearly tumbled out of her office chair.

she rushed to speak. “I only sent people to gather some information.”

A cold laugh came over the line. “You are useless. You cannot even pull off such a simple job. Working with you is nothing but trouble for me.”

Panic surged through Ciara. She spoke quickly. “Mr. Reynolds, I’m heading to Planet A18 in three days. 1 will find the energy field and Starcore Essence for sure this time.”

His tone calmed slightly after hearing her promise. “Fine. I will send another squad of men to back you up. They will keep Layla and her group occupied.”

Relief flashed across Ciara’s face. “You have my word, Mr. Reynolds. I will locate the energy field.”

“We shall see.” His voice stayed sharp and unforgiving. “Do not reach out to me again if you botch this assignment.
