Chapter 442 That’s the Energy Field!

la gave a short, gentle nod. “Alright, let’s head in.”

Once they reached the cave, Arnold spoke up. “This cave goes really deep. You guys only saw the outer section last time. There’s far more miasma further inside, plus mutated creatures. Everyone needs to stay sharp.”

He paused, shifting his weight before he kept talking. “The energy field also grows much stronger deep down. You’ll feel its energy pulses the second you get close, and that should make it easy to track.”

Everyone nodded. They followed Arnold and stepped carefully into the cave.

The cave was dark and damp. Light was dim all around them, and a thin layer of miasma hung in the air The fumes made their heads spin.

Shane pulled out the gas masks he had prepared ahead of time and passed one to each person. “These masks use the best filter charcoal available across interstellar space.”

Once they put the masks on, the sickening, distinct stench of miasma vanished completely.

They kept moving forward. The cave stayed quiet, save for their own footsteps and steady breathing.

Strange cries echoed out of the deeper parts of the cave every now and then, sending chills down their spines.

Carson walked at the very front. He gripped his axe tight, scanning every corner with alert eyes, ready to react to any sudden threat. react

They hiked for roughly half an hour. The miasma thickened, and light grew even fainter.

Just then, Arnold froze in his tracks.

He tilted his head, listening closely, his face turning serious. “Watch out-something’s up ahead.”

Layla stopped right away. She shut her eyes, tuning out her sight and sharpening her hearing instead.

Heavy, labored breathing reached her ears, along with the beat-and-flutter of large wings.

She snapped her eyes open. Several pairs of glowing green eyes glinted out from the surrounding blackness.

Moments later, huge bats burst out of the shadows and dove straight toward their group.

These bats looked nothing like ordinary ones.

Their wings stretched wide, lined with sharp barbs. Their razor-sharp teeth glowed with toxic purple light- clear signs they had mutated from heavy miasma exposure.

“Look out! Those bats are poisonous!” Arnold shouted.

He immediately pulled out the weapon he was carrying and charged toward the incoming swarm.

Carson moved just as fast. He spun his axe over his head. Every swing connected with a bat, and each struck creature dropped to the ground, lifeless.

Onger held up his Starcore Essence shard. The energy ripples it threw off confused the bats’ sense of direction.

Most bats navigated by their own sonic pulses. The energy waves scrambled their senses, and they crashed blindly through the dark like sightless animals.

Liam blurred across the space, dagger flashing in his hand. He struck fast and cut down bat after bat.

George swept both hands through the air. A sheet of water materialized out of nowhere and blocked the bats right in front of Layla.

Shane used that moment of cover to get his healing potions ready. He wanted to be able to jump in righ away if anyone got wounded or poisoned.

Layla did not stand idle either.

She drew the Broad War Saber Emily had given her and struck clean, quick blows.

The brutal fight ended at last. Hundreds of bats lay dead across the ground. The air reeked of fresh blood and rot.

The whole group let out slow breaths of relief. Every person had splatters of blood on their clothes, and they looked pretty beaten-up.

Layla let out a quiet laugh. “This seems to be our worst experience yet, aside from the Quetzalcoatlus incident.”

Shane let out a long sigh. “These bats aren’t all that tough on their own. You just can’t keep up when there are so many of them.”

Arnold nodded in agreement. “Lots more mutated creatures like these live deeper inside this cave. We have to be even more careful.”

They all acknowledged his warning. They fixed themselves up quickly, drank some water, and pressed onward.

Another dozen minutes passed. The miasma slowly thinned out, and faint light glowed ahead of them.

Every member of the group could feel the thrumming energy pulses.

Arnold and Oliver’s faces lit up. “That has to be it.”

Layla took the lead and picked up her pace toward the glow.
