Wilbur studied Layla’s expression carefully.

Layla kept her eyes locked right on him.

The second their gazes met, Layla laughed and gave his shoulder a light pat. “I was just teasing you. You didn’t take me seriously, did you?”

Wilbur could tell from her face that she had not really been joking. He forced a stiff smile onto his lips.

“Right, of course. There is no way there could be a spy,” he said.

He had been on the show since day one, and he assumed no one would ever suspect him.

Wilbur let out a quiet breath of relief.

Then Layla leaned forward and took hold of his wrist.

Wilbur jumped, caught off guard by her sudden movement.

“Why does your skin carry the same strange scent we found on the black bear?” She pulled his sleeve further down his arm.

The dark stain on his wrist was fully exposed for everyone to see.

His face turned unnaturally pale. His mental defenses crumbled instantly, and his legs gave out beneath him. He dropped to the ground.

Wilbur begged, “I never meant for this to happen, but Ms. Ciara Grant offered me a huge payment.”

Layla stared down at him, everything clicking into place. “So you took her job because you needed money?”

Wilbur nodded.

Layla’s voice turned ice cold. “You had plans to betray this competition from the very start, didn’t you?”

Wilbur nodded once again, confirming her accusation.

Wilbur glanced at Layla and the males standing behind her.

Without a moment’s hesitation, he shifted into his beast form and began digging frantically into the dirt, trying to escape.

George, who had been watching from hiding, widened his eyes. “He is trying to run!”

As a jerboa, Wilbur was naturally far better at tunneling than anyone else in their group. Layla could only stand there and watch him vanish underground.
