Still, Wilbur showed no signs of plotting anything behind her back, aside from obvious shock and admiration.
Layla kept her warm smile as she watched him.
They traveled deeper into the overgrown land, where Vanguard’s cameras struggled to follow them. That was when Layla noticed Wilbur making a quiet movement behind her.
She glanced out of the corner of her eye.
Wilbur slipped a small black communicator out of his pocket, tapped its buttons quickly with his fingertips, and stuffed it back out of sight in an instant. His motion was so fast it would have gone unnoticed by most people.
A faint smile tugged at Layla’s lips. A hidden spy could never fully cover their tracks.
The two reached the edge of the hollow.
Layla held up a hand to stop Wilbur, then circled around to the side. She pushed aside the tall weeds and peered into the clearing.
The hollow sat completely empty. No large wild beast could be seen anywhere.
Crushed weeds covered the ground, and strange prints marked the dirt.
These marks did not belong to a large predator or a black bear.
They looked far more like tracks left by some kind of mechanical vehicle. The edges were clean, and each print had the exact same depth, so they could not have formed naturally.
Wilbur noticed the shift in Layla’s expression and stepped closer out of curiosity. “Is the beast inside?”
His eyes flashed with panic the second he saw the tracks. He quickly put on a confused look. “Could the beast have already run away? Or are we searching in the wrong spot?”
Layla turned toward him. She held his gaze firmly, studying his face, then broke into a calm smile.
She said, “We are in the right place. There is no wild beast, but someone drove a mech vehicle’ through this area. That may be even more dangerous than facing an animal.”
Layla crouched down and ran her finger along the edge of one mark. A fine layer of black powder stuck to her skin.

She lifted her finger to her nose and breathed in the scent. It smelled just like the virus-infected animals they had found before.
Wilbur’s face paled when he watched her.
He stumbled over his words. “Could this just be a coincidence? Maybe the black bear came through here and left these marks?”
Layla glanced at him, keeping her soft smile, though suspicion flickered deep in her eyes.
She said flatly, “That is impossible. A black bear would never leave prints like these.” She stood and brushed dirt off her hands.
A loud shouting noise suddenly echoed from a distance. George and Oliver had started their argument, just as Layla had planned.
They had not been assigned to this mission, yet they had secretly followed the group.
Layla had signaled them moments earlier, and they began to fight on purpose to draw everyone’s attention.
Layla pretended to hear the commotion. She frowned and hurried toward the noise.
Wilbur did not follow her right away. He stayed rooted on the spot, pulled out his black communicator once more, and sent some kind of message.
Then he rushed after her, a faint trace of panic still on his face.
Once she reached them, Layla gave George and Oliver a silent signal to end their fight.
Instead, both males shot her a quick look and nodded toward something nearby.
Layla’s frown deepened. A virus-infected rabbit lay on the ground.
The animal’s whole body shook with spasms. Its eyes glowed bright red, thick slime dripped from its mouth, and a faint foul odor drifted off its fur. It looked exactly like the dead black bear and contaminated fish they had discovered before.
George had planned to kill the rabbit immediately to stop the virus from spreading further.
Oliver had blocked him, saying they should bring the creature back so Shane could run tests on
Their fight had started over that disagreement.
Their angry words were completely genuine, not an act at all.
